Well just got done heat treating a little bowie I was making out of 1095. So Im in the shop and I run the blade on the grinder to take of the light scaling that had developed. I finish with 120 on the grinder and do a quick buff on the blade to see if I have any deep scratches or Nicks. As I examine the blade my heart drops, there is about a 1/4 in long hairline crack about a third the way up the blade. I was so upset that i stabbed the blade into my workbench and went back in the house. I did the heat treat properly I know this from experience but Id have to guess that I may have thinned the blade out too much. Maybe about 1mm or so at the edge. If anyone has any other ideas Id like to know so i can prevent this next time. Shame too because the top of the tang was all fileworked too :mad::mad:

Cant get a picture because even my Macro lens can focus on the polished surface unfortunatley

Some details about the HT and your equipment may give some clues. Also, what was the steel source.

Sorry for your loss there. I hate that. +1 to Stacy, my first thought was what was your temp and your quench medium.

Perhaps you can cut the crack out, and re-heat treat a smaller blade out of it to save the filework you did.

Had that happen. Unfortunately the crack developed or showed long after I finished it. A friend caught it on my table at a show AAARRRGGG. Took the knife home and did a destructive test on it. That blade held up remarkably well. In the land fill now. It sucks but it happens.
