suede texture on handles?

Recently a number of tool making companies have been applying a coating of some type of rubber or plastic based texture to the grips of their pliers that is very similar feeling to suede, usually black but sometimes gray.

Here's how this relates to knife making: I thought it would be perfect to coat the handles of knives with bare metal or very low friction handles, such as the brass or aluminum handled khukuris from Gurkha House, the Becker line of knives, etc. It seems like a very durable texture and is probably impervious to most pertroleum based liquids, solvents, and other chemicals found in garages and machine shops at the very least.

Does anyone have any leads on this product or any similar product? It appears that the plier grips are dipped into this texture, but they could possibly have sprayed it on--I'm not quite sure. I found some black rubber liquid (comes in red also) at Lowe's (I forget the name on the can) that you can dip tool handles, bungee cord hooks, and pretty much anything else in, but it dries into a shiny finish, and doesn't offer much texture.

Any info would be much appreciated.

X-HEAD,i dont know if this is what you exactly had in mind but, there are 2 products on the market that would be interesting to try.Herculiner & Dupli-color,both are do it yourself bedliner for pickups etc.,they are polyurethane w/rubber bits in suspension. It dries very hard & is non slip.Ive often wondered how it would work on knife handles. They are sold @ Wal-Mart,NAPA,etc.

MJH, your idea might be a good one. I'm going to look into that. It should certainly be durable enough! (and watertight)

A friend had his bedliner and tailgate done with something similar and it is guaranteed for life. He was so pleased with it that he did the prep work and then took his aluminum boat in and had that done, too. It is actually waterproof! Might be interesting to investigate... maybe you can post a couple of pics after you get one done?
