hi, I put a peice of 440c bar stock, 5/32x1 1/2x8" on the sufrace grinder to clean up the scale. i took very light (.0005) passes till it cleaned up, and warped it pretty bad. can this only be done on a wet grinder? thanks to anybody that has advice on this.

did you take the same amount off of both sides....this is essential. if you dont have a full coolant bath you need to go very very slowly or it will get hot and set up all kinds of stresses in the metal...having said that, when i grind 440c i get it dull red and it comes back from paul bos pretty darn straight. i used to precision grind my folder backs out of 416 on my tool and cutter grinder and had the same problem, only these are small pieces of metal. i found that if i took two or three passes on one side and then turned it over and did the same and then turned it over again i got rid of a lot of the problem....

Another couple things you can try:
-reduce amount of downfeed (.0001-.0002 max)
-decrease the amount of crossfeed (slow as possible) while increasing the longitidinal feed
Dont know what you're using for a wheel, but
I've had good results with a 60 grit white Aluminum oxide wheel 'k' hardness and fairly open bond.

These are great ideas!

I use porous wheels and set the stock on the table at the sharpest angle posible. This puts the stress from grinding going along the shortest line ...
