Hey guys it's been awhile since I've posted here. I am going to get an oven soon and was thinking about the sugar creek. What I was think was get the big programable one I can do most all of my knives in a small one but when I do anything large I would not have that capability. Currently I do all my 1095 and 5160 knives in a forge at home and my friend dphillips does my air hardening steels. Now I would also like to get a smaller manual one, that I could do my small 1095 and 5160 blades in because it would not take as long to heat up and I can also temper in it with not having to wait for the other to cool down.

Questions:
1. Is this a good idea?
2. How many diff programs will it hold
3. I've read on here that the manual doesn't hold temp very well and needs constant adjustment, is the true for all manuals or was it just a problem with that one?

1. I have the small sugar creek and think it's great.
2. If I remember right it holds 7 or 8 programs.
3. I got mine without the auto control and what a P.I.T.A. Two months later I ordered the controller, and it was a pain to install, so order it with the controller from the factory. Moon.

I have the large Sugar Creek and like Moon, bought it with manual controls, ordered digital controller soon after.

Also have a large Paragon.

Would it hold temp well enough to temper and do simple carbon in, I am planning on having both so I will have one with the controller already the manual would mainly be for tempering

I have the SC Big Knife Kiln with the Orton controller. It holds 9 programs with 9 steps in each. Even with the ramp it overshoots the intitial temp by 15-25degs, so I program a heat 35-45 degs lower and hold it for 2-3minutes prior to hitting my target. Overall, it is a great kiln for the money.

BTW... it says 24" deep but it is 23" with the door shut.

Rick
