I know this has been goan over before but here we go again.
I finally desided to build another gas forge. Mine is 12" deep and I want a longer one (let's not go there) to do some longer blades.
I will be making some damascus so keep that in mind.
I'll keep this one for the smaller stuff.

Hey Larry, Did you see the forge The old fart posted a few days ago. The anchor chain man is whom I'm refering to.

Hey guys, keep an eye on my Forge Gallery pages, I'm going to have an update there sometime this week and have around 16 new forge submissions to put up there including I.G.'s forge building tutorial for that cool welding forge he made. Also, if you wouldn't mind me having pictures and information on *your* forges on there as well please send me pics via email or snail mail with information and I'll get them up there as well. This will hopefully become a resource for ideas for people building forges! :)

Yes I saw it. Think I'll open the front of my little forge a little so I can forge some larger ( hawk type) stuff and build a welding forge as the larger one.
Was wondering if it could be built square with fire brick or if it is necessary to have the curved surface inside the forge. Also if it would be advisable to put 2 burners, one side toward the front and the other side toward the back to get a more even heat flow. Even heat for the heat treat would stop some of the warping that happens sometimes.

HEY!!! I resemble that remark :D :D And it is MR. OLE FART to you sonny. At least I don't have a rash in my arm pits. Other places maybe. :p :D

You definately want the venturi effect to get the heat more even. I'm making my new one with two burners this time. It wont be that much heavier than the freon forge hopefully. I'm going to try putting one burner towards the front and one towards the middle, both pointing aft. The interior will benefit from having the venturi effect.

Mark:
Venturi versus forced air is very debatable. Gary Rua has been using a venturi one for years was very pleased with my forced air so much that we are building one for him.
Everyone has an opinion and butt. In your case you have two (butts) one intake and one exhaust. HEHEHE!!!!! :p ;) :D If J. Neilson reads this he should chime in. :D

Hey Mr. O.F.

I was refering to the venturi effect, not a venturi burner. There's not much debate that I've seen about forced air vs venturi when it comes to heat. Forced air gets hotter.

You are putting two forced air burners in your forge???? You will be able to weld a battleship in that sucker.

You going to put them on the same side or opposite??

I started with a venturi but, switched to a blower style like George's. I prefer them feeling the heat up hotter and quicker. Of course, it all depends how they're built, I would think. I'm sure there are venturi's that work just as well. I just haven't used or seen one yet.

Ignorance can be bliss I use a venturi based on one of Ron Reils early designs.
About 16 inch long and 10 inch pipe.

It welds nice has very few parts. Blowers may be better but I have never seen one in action so I am happy with what I have. By getting hotter I'm not sure if the guys are talking re heat time between welds but I am an amature.
I am not particularly fit so I can use an extra minute between heats to get my breath back.

I am now going to make one from 8 inch pipe and 12 inch long so that it is more portable. I was hoping I could use less gass with the smaller unit. It seems a waste I built the long forge for damascus I like to fold in 1/3 rather than 1/2 so the extra length is handy but the small one blade forging with a damascus billet or piece of carbon steel the small one should be fine but time will tell.

Has anyone had trouble with 8inch pipe being too small or am I ok with that.

Same side Larry, at the 7-8 o'clock position. Seems to work good on my little forge. Just have to make a stand to keep it up in the air to have room for the burners.
