Gents,

My friend is looking for a Christmas present for his father in law who is a farmer. He started with the Kershaw Leak but found out the blade was too short. He needs a 4 inch blade.

The price range is about $100 give or take. What would you suggest for a quality folder in this price range that will get a variety of use in the field.

Thanks,
Dave

Spyderco Police model, VG-10 steel, under 100.00, one of my EDC's. Excellent knife.

Spyderco Endura - $50.00

If you don't mind spending a little more, I would suggest the Spyderco Manix for $120.00.

I like the Police model that was recommended above, but the stainless handle can get slippery at times.

Toss in another vote for the 710.
It's a hard-use folder with great steel and a top-notch lock.
Blade is right around 4" long.
Peace.

Benchmade 710 or 73X.

I like the Endura and Police recommendatios except I find the tips a little thin. They work great for slicing, but much poking and any prying will damage them. If the recipient is anything like farmers I know they will use the knife for everything and a strong tip is a must in that situation.

Benchmade 710HS. A little more than $100 from internet dealers, but worth every penny.

I'd go with a Spyderco Manix, which you can get for a bit over $120. The handle is very comfortable, the blade shape is great and S30V is an excellent steel. Plus the holes are easier to use with gloves than studs, IMO.

Another Benchmade 710 nod here.

And i will add again, when it is minus 30C, studs are easier to hook with gloves then a recessed hole.(I dont understand how it could be easier with a hole, but to each thier own, my leather winter work gloves, wil not snag the hole, i have tried, where as on the stud, i can use my thumb, finger etc..)

It wouldn't be as popular as it is around here, if it wasn't worth it.

I recently recieved a CRKT Carson M21-04 in a trade (thanks again Andy), and it is a big stout folder.
Check one out before you buy.

Good luck,
Allen.

Queen Mountain Man or Schatt & Morgan version. The Queen could be cocobola or carved bone, with D2 steel, the Schatt is wormgroove bone with ATS34. Lockback, great blade profile, fine steels, real bone, go old school and enjoy it much!

BM 710.

Custom Buck 110 with some nice scales and BG-42. He could print up a picture of the screen image and tell his father-in-law, "This custom design is being made right now for you." Father-in-law wouldn't get it till January though.

BM 710- plain edge. Got mine after listening to you guys and doing some searches. Its a superb knife. Has a somewhat traditional look without any comprimise on performance. got mine on ebay for 112 shipped.

I love my spydies, SOGS and CS knives, but my EDC is now the 710, hands down. If i was working on a farm or ranch i might consider the serrated version. I dont like the black coatings unless i'm on a ninja mission.

oh yea, and the 710 has a 3.9 inch blade which is legal to carry here in CO, while the 4" recon is not.

3.9 inch is also illegal to carry concealed in Colorado. 3.5 inches is the limit.
