Suggestion About Damascus and BG-42 Markings

Goose mentioned that the Custom Damascus blades have the standard Buck logo and date markings on them.

Anyone else think that should be changed?

I have one on the way.......so it's too late to do anything about it, but for the future--I suggest they stop it.

To me, producing a "Custom Shoppe" knife with blade markings identical to the standard knives just serves to cheapen the look of that "custom" knife.

Especially troubling on a really premium looking steel like the Damascus.

I also think most of the customers would be happier if they replaced that prissy "Designer's Choice" stamp on the BG with something a little more desirable.......like a Bos stamp or something.

Ya know what, this is one of the reasons I like this forum. Learn something new. And soemtimes it's something right under your nose.

The newer raindrop SS Damascus from Buck has the tang stamps as seen below.
BUT, I never noticed that reverse side of the 2007 also has "DESIGNERS CHOICE" but the 2006 stamped blades do not.

I like the date stamps. THe "DESIGNERS CHOICE" doesn't do anything for me though...besides, shouldn't there be an apostrophe in "DESIGNER'S"? And it was "my" choice, not their's ;)

I do like the date code on the stamp. I don't care what the rest says as long as Buck and USA are on there. The date code becomes very important in the years to come when we are trying to figure out when the knife was built. As you know, the box and paperwork are easily lost along the way. At the moment we have far to many knives out there with the anvil/custom tang stamp on them that were not made in 2002. This is very frustrating for those of us who are trying to build a comprehensive history of Buck knives.

AGH!!!!

To me, a custom knife blade with exactly the same markings as a $29 Wal-Mart special is just plain tacky.

Easy enough to designate a date some other way on the knife.

Buck should think about that one for the future......along with the "Designer's Choice."

Mine all have an apostrophe, Goose......yours doesn't?

Well...hot damn! I should wear my glasses. Yep, apostophe is there. Hard to see on the Damascus pattern...but clear as day with my glasses on and on my Bee-Gee 42s.

So far as the stamp being an indicator of when the knife was built. It's more of an indicator of when the blade was made/stamped. But, I still prefer it.

Like Richard, I am okay with the stamping as long as "BUCK USA" are there. On the date code, those that know, know the diff between a stock and CS. I got a few of those Anvil jobs where I wonder, "when was this made?".

I'd WAY prefer the "Anvil Jobs."

At least they have class and don't have the exact same stamp as a $29 "Wal-Mart Job."

But there should be a middle ground here......a way to designate date and still have a stamp that befits a custom knife.....that's not a difficult task.

The normal year symbol could be incorporated into a custom stamp rather than using the same stamp that's used on the Wal-Marts.

Goose got this news:

"Goose!
You got the very last Damascus blade in the building. I’ve had to turn away other orders.
I’m not sure when we are getting any more blades and I am not sure if they will have a year code stamp on them.
They might just read “Buck Custom” on the blade".

This is good news for me because it must mean that I may NOT get stuck with a Custom Damascus with a stamp identical to any Wal-Mart 110.

I realize that any information that has come from Buck lately has been subject to change without notice......but, to me, this is very good news if it holds up.

I hate the idea of that beautiful blade having the same stamp as a Wally Knife.

However, I think Buck should be pondering the notion that a unique dating system for Custom knives would be a very good idea.

That is, of course, if Buck ever deems to ponder such a thing. And based on past performance......pondering is discouraged at that company.

Well Goose,

Looks like you got a reject 06 blade!!! My Dammy 06 has the DC stamp on it. Now we can't have that defective blade on the Goose knife....so send it to me I'll grind off the Goose engraving;):p:D Then I'll put it in with the rest of my reject knives...LOL

yes it is !!!
while i agree with RM on the logic of his statements
i tend to not like year stamps..because of how many 25 year anserversy knives are out there with year marks other then the 25 th year!
some marked ahead some marked years behind,
custom stamped blades that are dated by box contents both before and after the year mark the of the non custom verson....
i said i hated them tell i started to catlaoge my knives... OMG then i understood the issues very well...
now i would that buck stamp on the back side of the blade some kind of year inducation ...
my personal fav is roman numbers...next out line of a state like idaho was or a circle with dots that change every year first inside circle then out side then combanation of both.. all on back side! either will give enught diffrent marks to out last any of us here ... let great grand kids sort what next!
