Someone else mentioned keeping his name in the moderator list.

That's a good idea. But instead of sending that link to an EMail address, it should go to the opening page of a memorial.

Put in a nice parahraph or so on him, then a link into the main memorial thread currently growing, then a collection of "best of James Mattis" threads culled from all over and suggested by forumites", and finally a link to the new permanent home of his personal pages currently at: http://home.earthlink.net/~jkmtsm/

Thoughts?

I volunteer to do a good part of it...people could EMail me those links from across BF that they feel best represent him, and I can add all that into the initial "opening memorial page" layout. But someone with more HTML experience than me should handle the mirror job, and we'll need Spark to splice the opening memorial page into the "moderator EMail link" if that's possible.

All comments welcome.

A great idea! I will offer my assistance. Don't know how I can be of help, but I'll do what I can.

I think that the two posts by James in this thread were some of his best: http://www.bladeforums.com/ubb/Forum54/HTML/002379.html I've reread them several times.

This last paragraph especially is one of the most insightful things I've read about knives.
And notice that the Jewish/Christian creation story says "...and God separated the light from the darkness," creating order from chaos. Spyderco describes their products as "high performance matter separators." We cut things to create things. In the beginning, that's food and clothing from what would be just carion to any other scavenger. And of course, as there is a choice between "life and death, blessing and curse," attached to most everything in life, so a knife can be used to sustain and enhance life, or to create chaos and death.

yes....you gotta say he kept you smiling.. one of my favorite attributes in a person

Hi Jim,

I think this a great Idea! I have been out of town from the 13th to very late last night.

First thing this morning I check my email and then come here to see what has been happening. I am literally in shock. I can't believe what I am reading, it just doesn't seem possible.

The 7 page (at this point) thread is going strong, I have it open in another window. I haven't posted to it yet, nor have I read through what has been posted. It will be a little while before I do. I'll have to steel myself for this one.

Only proviso I can think of is we should contact Toni after things quiet down, and make sure we have her blessings.

James had a wonderful way of defusing somewhat tense situations. I lifted this post from the following thread:

So much Internet, so little time!

I get some pleasure from finding a relentlessly peaceful use for a combative looking knife. Like pruning a shrub with a Matriarch yesterday, or slicing bread with a SIFU a few weeks ago.

Today's load, which some might think is excessive: William Henry CF Lancet, SpyderCard, Spyderco Dragonfly, Leatherman Wave, Victorinox Explorer, Benchmade 705BT, SpydeRench, Benchmade 800SBT, and Spyderco Matriarch. (Trousers held up with suspenders)

Experience with mortal combat - none.

Tastes in Forum postings - Mild, peaceful, except when I start ranting about Slick Willy and the Butchers of Beijing.

Tastes in music - Classical, traditional, country music from strange countries. Varttina (strong women from Finland) when I'm thinking puukkos. Mozart goes well with multitools - logical, mathematical music. One-hand G10 folders go well with Huun Huur Tu (very weird vocal sounds from Tuva, just north of Outer Mongolia). Cutting ege CD of the week - Dusha - The Soul of Bulgaria with the Bulgarian All Star Orchestra - a strong woman with a bagpipe among other pleasures.

And here's a troll for your amusement:

I'm with you on this one, great idea. I'll help if it's needed, just put me to work.

Here was an exchange between James and Toni in this thread: http://www.bladeforums.com/ubb/Forum54/HTML/000958.html Hope you don't mind, Toni.

From James:

This year I gave The Wife a William Henry Spearpoint in pearl.

She liked it! She wears it! She took it to the office and bragged about it!

For 30 years, she thought I was nuts.

Actually, she still thinks I'm nuts.

From Toni:

It has been a slow process. I showed it to some guys at work who were clueless about its real value. (One of them bought a Pakistani kris from the Home Shoping Network, for God's sake!) I explained that under the standards of the movie "Patton" only New Orleans pimps carry pearl-handled pistols. Jim says by that standard I qualify to be a New Orleans madam. Since I am a California lawyer, I guess it is a step up. It is a thing of beauty and a joy forever.

Great idea - I'd hate to lose all the info on James's website. That is a part of his legacy and we owe it to him to keep it available. Come on, Mike & Spark!
