Any suggestions for a stone with high grit (highest I have is 1k) needs to be higher then current amount no idea what material I want and has to be under 30 bucks. It would be for the final stage after 1k grit to really sharpen it up I already have a strop I want it to use water (oil is okay just not my preference). And it would not have to sharpen anything harder then 1095 for now also I would lake it if it didn't just suck the metal pieces up as my stones are constantly getting clogged

don't know anything over 1k that is under 30.00, a blue Belgian then at approx. 4k around 40.00. I go from a 1.2k dmt to a bbw with no problems.

If under $30 is firm, the 4k King stone is pretty good as long as you aren't working on really tough steels. If you can go up to $60 or so a lot more options open up.

1k what?

Are we even talking about Japanese waterstones?

Are you sharpening pocket knives, kitchen knives, chisels, etc?

Your choices in your price range are:

- Spyderco 303F (fine only) or 303MF (medium and fine) - these are small ceramic pocket-sized sharpeners, 4" x 1"
- Naniwa 3000 "Economical" - waterstone 6 7/8" x 2 1/8 x 5/8" thick
- DMT Dia-sharp Extra-fine plate - 6" x 2"
- Hard Black Arkansas oilstone, though to find one under $30 it would have to be pretty small. 4" x 2" are about $33.

What steel would be to tough? Also it needs to be around 30 bucks I'm willing to spend maybe 15 more if there isn't anything in my price range

I use the bbw on anything up to s35v and anything above that I use diamond paste on a strop to polish. and jc57 the dmt ef is 1200, he wants more than 1k the 1.2 is not enough above 1k to mention. the black arkie is a natural as is the bbw, the sb arkie might be worth looking into but at 30 bucks above 1k is hard to find in a decent stone.

They come in under $30 at most retailers. Too tough would be s30v and anything with higher concentration of Vanadium. Stuff like 154cm and 440c are close to the upper limit in terms of what it can do on carbides. For carbon steels they can handle just about anything, as well as fine grained stainless, Aus8, Sandvik.

If you go up another $15 or 20 the field opens up, but as long as you don't need a lot of versatility the King 4k will work very well.

As Jason pointed out, there are different rating systems, so assuming your 1k is on a Japanese scale the 4k will be a step up. If on a North American scale it will still be better than a 1k but not by a whole lot. What is your 1k stone?

What kind of stones are you currently using? There can be a huge difference between two different 1000grit stones depending on the abrasive type, binder type, grit rating system used, the finish of the stone....etc.

I believe it's a Arkansas stone from smith it came in a 2 pack with this other ceramic stone

An 8000 grit is highest you NEED but also get a 15,000 for those days when you want to feel like the bad boy of the knife sharpening world.
Ha, ha,
Yah that's funny. That's a good one.
No, but seriously now . . .
You could get a nice Shapton for around $100
Or just for 1095 etc., you could get a translucent Arkansas but that can be up around $200

PS : cheep high grit stones have a use but only if you need to hold a door open.

Yeah. I'm also going to say, save up more money.

My 8000 grit was at least 80 bucks, and that's considered a cheap brand (kitayama).

cheapest way out is the bbw. and I assure you nothing else has the feel of it. if you need a source pm me.a 6x2 around 40.00 or so

I admit my budget is small but I'm only 14 yrs old so I don't have much money lying around. Perhaps I should get a paddle strop with paste would that work? I'm kinda a noob when it comes to sharpening I have a lansky but wanted to get some finishing stones to go with my cheap ceramic Arkansas and diamond free hand stones

james w, is the kit you have a brownish stone on a plastic base with a smaller white stone under the bottom side held in by two tabs? if it is you have a 400 man made and a hard natural arkie around 1k to 1.2k.
mycough its Christmas put me down for 5 and I will send him a postal mo I need an address though, he can send you or me an email and we go from there. I think he has the kit lowes sells. it is a decent starter kit for knives. I think he needs something about 4k to be finer. I go 600, 1200 to 4k with no problems. I don't have pay pal anymore my daughter does though I could have it pay pal thru her. Merry Christmas everyone.

No thx I'm not asking for help to buy it I'm not going to except it but thx anyway If im going to get one I'm going to buy it with my money I appreciate all yalls thoughfulness but I couldn't except it

In reply to post above: yes it's that one

The stone that I posted in the link above is 2k and then 5k would that work?

don't know anything at all about taidea, all my stuff is natural or diamond other than a few I use for lapping other stones. I saw the lowes stones while looking at a Kershaw knife they had.you need to look hard at the 4k bbw if you want a good edge, it has a feel like no other and feels like rolling on ball bearings. they go around 40.00 incl shipping and you wont be disappointed in what you get. it is my touch up on all my knives and leaves hazy mirror finish if you use weight of blade honing. its your cheapest way out for the highest grit in a known good stone.as I said I have a source you can email me off the forum here and look at what you will get. its the most bang for the dollar.
