For a Buck Custom Shop offering, I'd like to see Mokume bolsters along with Brass and Nickel Silver as options for the Buck Custom 110. Would anyone else like to see this?

I don't know...

Could you post a pic of a Mokume bolster, so us backwoods 'billies could get an idea of what they is??? ;)

Thanks for the examples and the link!:thumbup:

It's an attractive laminate, and would make an outstanding custom (indeed, it already has!). :D

Where would Buck obtain the requisite sheets of this for the Custom Shop? Is it readily available??? I don't have the latest catalogs from my two favorite knife suppliers, and only one lists Mokume by Mike Sakmar. Pics there aren't too clear.

What do you see the Mokume being offered with, in blade materials??? I'm sure some would immediately say Damascus, but that would be too much of the swirl pattern, IMO...

It would take some additional training in buffing, since the materials used are different hardnesses...

Interesting idea though... :)

I'll second the suggestion know that i have seen it and know what it is,lol.

I would build a bg-42 sambar stag and mokume bolstered 110 first up.

They could start with the options that are already available at the custom shop. Damascus with Mokume may be overpowering, though some may like it. Mokume with black oxide 420HC may be interesting, but for me, just good 'ol S30V satin finish or 420HC mirror finish and one of the woods would do just fine. :)

I imagine the best suppliers of Mokume sheets would be in Japan.

The bolsters don't look like actual Mokume, but appear to merely have a Mokume pattern applied to them. The frames are sintered, and made from powdered metal.

You may be right, but it's hard to tell from that photo. Mokume has been used for knife and sword fittings for centuries. Do you think Buck's current LE offering of Mokume in the Maple Burlwood 110 is actual Mokume, or a Mokume pattern applied to the bolster?

Whatever it is, I'd like to see it offered as an option in the custom shop.

I seriously doubt they are actual Mokume. That would require each frame to be fit individually. The sintered frames come out of molds; like cookies.

Perhaps it would be analogous to pattern weld Damascus and true Damascus (sort of). Still, I wish they would offer it in the custom shop for the 110, whatever it is.

It could be the photo. The maple burlwood 110 in the 2010 catalog looks much more subtle, and more to my liking, too. The pivot pin stands out on brass too after a while, but what can you do except polish it? I plan to get the maple burlwood 110 if any are available when I'm ready to buy. If it was offered by the custom shop, I'd take an S30V 'Mokume' knife with a wood handle, or maybe even Sambar Stag, or both.

It may be the etching technique used to apply the Mokume pattern that makes the pivot pin stand out. While the frames are sintered, I do believe the the frame pins are not.

I don't find this very disturbing, in fact I rather like it. I was hoping more here would like/want it so Buck Knives would bend an ear.

Though seeing in real life is the real test.
