I thought I'd see what you'all like... I love large folders, and depending on the tax return, may have $200 - $500 to put toward a new one.

I'm thinking 4.5 inch, up to maybe 5 inch blade, probably S30V, that sort of thing, and fairly flat for pocket carry. Prefer flat ground, and G-10, Micarta, or titanium good for the grips. Frame lock or liner, not lockback. Primarily to be carried much, used little, and when used, probably on food and soft stuff like that. Should be able to be used as a defense knife if bad things happen...

The Aftermath looks real good but with a 5.5 inch blade, it just carries a little large in the pocket. That's why I don't carry the Maxx any more.

I was thinking maybe the Lone Wolf Tactical Ranger, being a 5 inch flat ground, but it didn't get the best press in reviews. Anyone out there have one?

I was eying the 5 inch Kasper on Pat Crawford's web site, but they start at $600. Damn is that a nice knife though...

Anyway, what do you suggest?

If you are looking to spend that kind of money, why not talk to Darrell and see if you can get one made in 5" for that much. I think that the 5.5" and larger go for only slightly more than $500.

Do you really think I could get a one shot custom in the approximate price range? I hadn't thought I could. I'd love to have a 5 inch blade that is the exact same blade as on the Maxx (no recurve) but an Aftermath style handle, with a rounded butt. That would be just about the perfect knife.

(now how many times have I said that? :p )

crawford also has the perfigo, which is designed by kasper and is 4.5" long, a great knife i have one,

DRider,

I think you have a good chance of finding something custom made in your price range. All you have to do is start sending out some emails to the makers that intereest you asking for a price. If not new from the maker than I would also check around in the Sale Forums here. I have seen some pretty good deals there for new and slightly used custom blades.

Thank you - I appreciate the advice. :)

If you don't go with a custom, I would recommend the Benchmade 806D2 AFCK.

Hell, you could buy two of them.

Why not get a TOPS Magnum CQT hunter point, that way you could review it and I'd know whether or not I want one:)

I have one!

Its a great knife - it won the "handle" category of the great cardboard war - its just kinda little!

How 'bout the Benchmade Skirmish model 630?

I have one of those too! You are dead on (fits your screen name, eh?), it really hits all my specs...

Actually, I love the knife. And I hate it because really, I don't need any more knives now. Its a great self defense/general purpose knife. I was a little hesitant on the recurve but it really does work, when you start at the handle and slice the curve pulls the belly of the knive right through that cut. And because of that big curve, stuff like food prep is great because you can work the knife without your knuckles hitting the cutting board. And the handle has great ergonomics. And the lock is great. and so on and so on. Its by far the best production folder in that price range I've seen (except maybe an AFCK but that's got more limited applications and a shorter blade).

And the real problem is that my wife knows all this. I can't tell her there's anything wrong with the knife. Even the little rainbow dots aren't anywhere near as bad as I thought they would be because they are metallic colors, not actually rainbow colors.

But I thought that if there was something even better out there... :D

Have Matt Cucchiara make you a knife. I promise you won't be disappointed.

I Googled Mr. Cucchiara. His stuff looks very good! Thanks for the tip, I'll keep it in mind should said tax return and spousal-negotiations go well...

No offense, but when the blade goes over 4in. I prefer a fixed blade, give a look to Camillus CQB in 4 or 6in, Benchmade's Nimravus, or Al Mar's Sere Operator.

I carry a Kershaw Blurr, speed assist is great. It has a nice little glass breaker on it that can be used for defense in a pinch. I also have, and love the K-bar TDI, it' fixed blade but made to carry on your inner belt, for use during attempted weapon takeaway. I love both of these and never leave home without them.

I don't think the OP will get the custom in the price range he needs but I had a great experience both times I dealt with Crawford Knives. Great communication and very clear on where the knives were in the making process.
