I'd look for a good deal on a CRK, sometimes eBay has them cheap. Otherwise maybe a BM 140hs. I think MOD has a new fixed-blade out (other than the Razorback) that looks interesting. A lot of it depends on what you want to use it for, as you can find thin blades that cut well, or go for the sharpened prybar approach like a Busse Basic.

YOu may not be able to find everything you need in one package. If a carry system is important to you, which it sounds like it is, I owuld recommend focusing on the knives. Look for a knife about $30 less than your target price, and then you can ship it to a sheathmaker for a custom rig. In my experience, most stock sheaths are junk, but you never know. Focus on the knife and budget for a custom sheath.

You should consider the Fallkniven S-1, a great blade, get the Mad Sheath Doctor(Chiro75) to fix you up with an IWB sheath and you're good to go. I have the S-1 and A-1 and these are serious blades, I even prefer them over some of my custom fighters.

I'd contact GenO Denning and have him make you a custom to your specs. His leather sheaths are incredible, but if you're looking for a kydex rig you can always ship it off to a kydex specialist. GenO does phenominal work at incredibly reasonable prices, and his turn-around time is very fast for a custom maker. You can check out GenO's work at his site (I think it's www.cavemanengineering.com) or you can go to www.robertsoncustomcutlery.com and view some of his knives that Les has for sale. Good luck!

I will have to agree with Jake on this one.

I have a Fallkniven S1, and a F1, and 2 A1s. These are some serious knives, and I also like them more(or as much) as some of my customs. I am NOT afraid of using these, like I am some of my expensive customs. For the purposes you are describing, I would go with the F1. It is a little smaller and mine has a custom kydex sheath that makes for great carry.

I would definitely look at a custom, it is very nice to get a knife that is 'just right'.

Denning's work is nice, and usually gets the nod in terms of both price and quality.

I have and am working with Bill Siegle, he built me a drop point with a Japanese cord wrap that I absolutely love, I call it the 'Daily'.

Strider recently starting offering the 'MFS', I have one on order.

Allen Blade offers a great piece called the MEUK, I prefer it in steel.

Trace Rinaldi offers the mini-Enigma, go to www.theedgeequipment.com for images of that knife that will knock you out.

Kevin Pensinger of www.theedgeequipment.com also offers a Jerome Anders hunter which I have grown to desire.

RW Clark seems to specialize in 'personal' knives, you might give a look at his work.

Ed Caffrey offers his EBK, and it is probably one of the best forged deals in the world.

Chris Christman makes excellent japanese inspired 'city' knives, beautiful.

Mike Irie makes some excellent small knives.

All of those knives mentioned come with good Kydex or Concealex sheaths.

On the production side, I would suggest the BladeForums Camillus 154 cm Talon, available from this Forums main sponsor, www.1sks.com.

A DH Russell/Grohmann that I have had my eye on for some time is the Boat.

If you want to give yourself some time to make a good choice, you might consider getting a bargain utility like a Frost of Sweden. Or for something a bit different, the Mora 2000.

Hope some of this helps.

I would definatly recommend the Fallkniven line. The F1, S1, A1 will all fill the bill and you can get a custom made kydex sheath from NORMARK (Eric) at ON/SCENE TACTICAL without out even sending the knife out. I think he has all of the Fallkniven line in stock ready to ship at a very good price.

Good grief, Eye! You are way ahead of me here. The only thing I could think of to add would be......

Nope, second thought, I think you got 'em. That mini Enigma is definitely a must have.

thanks guys - a bunch of great suggestions - guess i should have mentioned i wanted the knife strictly for a defensive blade - and yes sheaths are important - some friends have some fixed blades (eg MOD razorback) and the darn sheath is terrible, imho, and the blade grind angle is way too steep, cant get it sharp for nothing - and he paid $150 for it - my old gerber mk1 has a better sheath(leather, quicksnap release, and a metal belt clip, head and shoulders above a MOD,imho) but thanks for the suggestions, any more info appreciated....

I was one of the first to complain about the sheath of the CRKT Companion. I have one coming from Normark.

After a bit more action, one of the two CRKT sheaths has loosened up to a realistic point. Haven't tried carrying it yet, but that's more forgetfulness than anything else. I really like the knife. For $29 at Bayou LaFourche, adding a custom sheath still keeps the price in the low-buck range.

Am surprised nobody mentioned the 154CM Talon from Camillus. Thought that was pretty well received.

Benchmade Nimravus works well for me, but the sheath sucked. Recently I found a local kydes sheath maker by the name of Barry Gordon whi made a nice IWB sheath at a good price. So impressed with his sheaths that I ordered a shoulder rig for my old Gerber Mk 1.

I have one of thoise CRKT Companions - knife is great, but sheaths are mediocre. Reckon I'll go see Barry again about another sheath.

My point is, get the custom kydex sheaths. If you get a decent knife, it's the one accessory that'll make your decent knife a better knife

The Fallkniven WM in a carbon fibre pattern multi-carry concealex sheath by Normark works for me. The combo is light enough to remove the belt loop and use as a neck knife if you desire. With the belt loops attached, it all but disappears in a variety of positions. The VG-10 blade takes and holds a superior edge too.

SIFU1A-

I am firmly of the opinion that a utility knife makes the best knife to carry, and if you are looking for it to have defensive capacity, simply choose a design that offers the defensive qualities you desire, in addition.

Of the suggestions I made, there is really no reason why any of those makers cannot alter one of their designs to suit your defensive needs, or they may have just what you are looking for.

For instance- Strider is known for their tactical knives. The Strider wrap is probably one of the best tactical grips in the world. And in terms of sheaths, I am very impressed with the quality and functionality of their sheaths.

I am anxiously awaiting my MFS.

In my post above, I used the terms 'personal' and 'city', these are used to describe knives that are convenient to carry everyday, the 'EDC'. I would think that a defensive knife would need that quality, with the addition of a very sure grip, and a strong blade, a good custom maker can provide exactly that.

As reecommended above, the Fallkniven F1 would be ideal. See Mike Sastre for a good IWB or belt sheath for unobrtusive carry.
