Hi folks.
I would like some suggestions please for a knife that I could get for a very good friend. He and his family run a trailer park and I would like to get him a "good" knife for his birthday. I have a budget of about $50 for the gift. The knife has to be about the 4 inches long closed and non assisted so that he does not "scare" the folks when he needs to cut something. The knife will be used often. I was thinking about a Case but open to suggestions. If a Case which model as this goes for any brand that is suggested.
His birthday is at the end of this month so I have some time.
So folks any good suggestions.
Thanks for any help that can be offered.

Take a look at the Colt Linerlock D2. It's a nice thin knife with a great blade of D2 steel. One of few knives I ever gotten in over 60 years of collecting/using/making knives that was really sharp out of the box. Also Kershaw makes some good, non-assisted openers in the sub $50 range. Others that might warrant a look would be other Colts, Schrade, Rough Rider and Marbles. All make good knives for mostly under $50. Of course there are always the Swiss Army Knives (SAKs) - a hundred styles and sizes, most under $50. Can't go wrong with any of the above mentioned.

ESEE Zancudo are great framelocks, right around 4" closed and flat so they carry easily.

I like the Case Trapper. The mini is convienent for pocket carry and is more of a dress knife or gentleman's knife. The full size Trapper is a very capable knife with a strong back spring.

I carry the mini trapper in dress clothes my wife carries a full size Trapper Equestrian around the barn.

I would recommend not getting the Zancudo, and getting a RAT II instead. I've got one sitting in front of me, and it ain't for me…

One of the sponsors has the Delica for $53 I think. That's 'the one,' IMO.

In budget a Spyderco Tenacious and outta budget a Spyderco Delica. Even non-knife guys can appreciate the ease of use of these two. I think you're getting a good bang for your buck for both of those

I will second the Ontario rat 2. Don't have a 2, but I like my rat 1. I think they run $25-35 depending on color.

Honestly I would recommend a Vic Alox Pioneer or the like. They are insanely good little knives, and no one has ever gotten scared about one of them that I have ever seen. Another very good model would be the Farmer, as it also has the saw.

Case Trapper is a great knife as well though. I think a little slip-joint or multi-tool would do him more good at that price range and with those needs than most else.
A good fixed blade might be good around there too. I find people don't really have any issue with a knife they can always see. As long as it's legal and he is comfortable with it.

Oh and tell him we all say happy birthday when the day arrives ;)

Wow thanks everyone for all of the comments.
Now I can go and look at the ones that everyone has suggested.
He carries now a small slip joint pocket knife that is very cheap and has seen better days that is why I figured that I would get him a good one.
Thanks again for all of the comments and if anyone else has any please feel free to let me know.
I will wish him Happy Birthday from all of you when his day arrives and that is March 28.
Regards
Tar :)
