Hi,
I'm new to the forums. I live in the UK and do a lot of carving, I tend to favour an opinel as it locks good and tight but is nice and simple to stick in my pocket.

I've just got hold of an 800g iron meteorite that I want turned in to a couple of blades, I haven't got a hope in hell of doing the forgework myself but I have tracked down a willing blacksmith.
I am intending to make the rest of the tool myself (assuming my whitefinger clears up enough to start carving again ) but I haven't got a clue about the construction of the various types of locking mechanism that can be used - can someone give me some pointers or maybe a website worth checking out

Now that's given me a couple of ideas, they're also stunningly well designed tools. I just hope I can come up with something like that.

If youre new to the game, and already like the Opinel pattern ( they are great knives :)), id be tempted to make the blades to the same size and pattern of your favorite Opinel. Buy a couple new Opinels and just replace the blades, maybe do some handle work to make them more to your liking. The tricky part I think will be removing the ring, and obviously making them the right thickness. Good luck ;) -- Charles

I was thinking of that, the ring isn't difficult to remove as it's only held in place by the rivet that also serves the blade. I needn't even stick to the blade shape, the trouble is it does mean ruining a perfectly good knife, they're not exactly expensive but it's kind of against my religion.
