Suggestions for a new knife?

Hey all. Not too long ago, I first said "hi" after having purchased a CRKT M16-13. I like the blade shape, I like the handle (especially the anodized aluminum it's made from), and I like the way it feels in my hand.

Unfortunately, after using it for a while now, I've decided I'm not so keen on the chisel ground edge

I like cutting my apple in half, instead of cutting a "scoop" out of it!

Does anyone have any suggestions for folders that "feel" like my M16 does, but have a hollow grind or flat grind blade?

Well, thats interesting. I have CRKT M16-03 (plain blade) and it is not a chisel grind.
So, if you don't care about the partial serration you might consider that one.

I noted one nasty thing about that anodized blade. I take my M16 with me when I go jogging or to the gym - hope that's not weird to anyone on BF that one takes a knife to a gym

. Anyways after the SECOND time I had it I noticed many little spots or RUST

on the blade. And it is not that I don't clean it after I swet on it. Anyone encountered a similar problem? Maybe there is
a problem with CRKT's anodizing process.

I ordered Tuf Cloth and hope that this will
help.

Jeeget,

The handles are annodized not the blade. Since the blades are bead blasted they will rust more easily than some of the other finishes.

Chaos, which M16 do you have? I wasn't aware that they were chisel ground.

I misread the info about it and I am not that good in recognizing that stuff by touch yet (my other knives are polished or BT coated blades).

Another thing about it though: the clip is
so rigid that it is very hard to actually
*clip* it on anything.

Other than that I think it is a great knife.

I've got the "medium length" combo blade version. Definite bevel on the left side of the blade and more-or-less flat on the right; that's chisel grind, isn't it? (Or do I have my terms mixed up?)

If the plain edge version isn't chisel ground, then I might just have to get one! I can live without the serrations

Hey folks, the blades aren't chisel ground, the edge is sharpened on one side. Not the same thing.

Easy to solve with a good sharpener (Lansky, Sharpmaker, etc)

OK, I'm confused. According to Joe Talmadge's Blade Geometry FAQ, "The chisel grind is a knife which is not ground at all on one side. So it is completely flat on one side, and has a bevel on the other."

So the difference between a chisel grind and the edge being sharpened on one side is???

My understanding of it is that a chisel ground knife has the blade ground on one side and is completely flat/unground on the other side. A knife sharpened on one side of the edge has the blade ground on both sides, but the edge ground in on only one side. I do believe the Emerson Commander, CQC7A, and the non-tanto point Emerson Raven are sharpened on only one side of the edge, but are not chisel ground. Maybe I'm confused...

A knife can be ground on both sides, but has a sharpened bevel on only one, it is still double ground, be it flat, convex or hollow.

If a knife is ground and beveled on only one side, with the other remaining flat, that is considered a chisel grind. As on a chisel, the common woodworking hand tool.

Sorry, didn't mean to start an argument about what the definition of "chisel ground" is! Whatever the proper name for it is, my M16-13 has a nice bevel on one side and is more-or-less flat on the other. It makes it really hard to cut in a straight line; I keep getting "scoops" out of my apples instead of nicely halfed fruit!

If I get a plain blade M16, will I be able to cut my apples in half easily or not? If not, any suggestions for similar knives that WILL half my apple?

Hey, looks like this cutting apple thing is very important to you!

I checked CRKT's web side, some others, the papers that came with my M16 and I didn't find any remark about a blade style being different between 1603 and 1613. So, it looks like your's will just need sharpening, or replacement.

Cheers,
Kris

So, it might be that your 16-13 is just a little "lemon" that either needs shapening (as some suggested) or replacement.

ChaosKitten, how much money are you willing to spend? They are a little more than the M-16 series, but I would highly recommend the Spyderco Wegner. Great knife, I end up carrying it more than anything else.

Kris, darn right the apple thing is important.

I can't well say I carry a folder to cut apples if I don't cut apples with it!

shootist, thanks for the suggestion. The Spyderco Wegner looks really nice, but at the moment I'm looking for something under $100. Any comments on the Native compared to the Wegner or the M16?
