Dear Blade Forum People,

I am new here and admittedly know very little about the world of knives. With that said, I do know what I am essentially seeking out; however, I don't know where to start. I'm hoping that folks here will be able to point me in the right direction.

So, what I want isn't all that unique, I simply seem to be having a hard time finding it in the size I want. Here are my "specs"

O1 Carbon fixed blade
Micarta handle
Maximum of 2.5-ish inch blade

That's it! I simply want a small utility or hunting knife with these features for everyday things, and I want to be able to take it anywhere. I can't seem to find the right thing in this size.

The two closest things I have come across are:

The Bark River Little Creek Knife
http://www.knifeworks.com/barkriverlittlecreekknifefixedbladeivorymicarta.aspx

and the Moki Banff
http://www.knifeworks.com/mokibanffblacklinenmicartahandles618overall.aspx

The Moki is REALLY the exact shape and look of what I'm after, the only downside being the VG-10 blade. I'd prefer high carbon O1. The Little Creek knife is nice also, but again, it's A2. I'm leaning towards the Moki I think, but I'd love to hear people's thoughts here. Thanks in advance!

Check out the Esee Candiru, sounds like it fits the bill perfectly. 2 inch blade, carbon.

Koster knives has a "Scout" in 3V. Excellent, just one half inch longer blade than you want. There are different grips here ( G10 and Micarta): http://www.knivesshipfree.com/product_info.php?cPath=815&products_id=21366

They are a contributing dealer I believe but if this is against the rules I apologize and will correct.

Blind Horse Knives makes a "Brookie" " Boattail", and "Spur" knife in O-1 with one of the best heat treats going in O-1 ( triple cryo, around rc 60 ish) Price is Excellent, well below a hundred $. Different grinds and grips, my favorite being FFG.Length between 2 3/8th and 2 1/2 inches blades. This dealer isn't a contributing member so I won't link. If you can't find this knife, or another you like at a contributing member dealer PM or E-mail me. Always try to go to the contributing dealers first even if they are slightly more ( probably have better price actually).

Look around other Kosters and other BHK knives. Both are top quality! Bark River has some 3V knives I like too in that size. Their A2 is no slouch either, but I like O-1 better. I'm probably in the minority there actually. A2 is a good steel in any event. Overall I like the Kosters and BHK's better. They are at the top in my book at price ranges 3 times the cost. Anza is another one that makes knives out of files in your size range for good prices. Well made and good quality for the price.

BF Knifemakers are some talented guys and can fix you up too.

Regards,

Joe

Check out Alan Davis on the maker's subforum. He's done a couple of smaller FBs for me in O-1 that are outstanding. If you like BHK's looks, they also have a custom shop and can turn out just what you're looking for.

Benchmade Bone Collector Mini Skinner, D2 steel, stonewashed, and 2.68" blade with micarta handles and leather sheath. PM me for where to get for best price new.

Check out J. Woytaz knives. He's on the forums as well. His "EDC" model is pretty much exactly what you are looking for.

Is there any reason why you won't consider other steels besides O-1? You're limiting yourself a lot. A-2, 1095 and other carbon steels will all perform more or less the same in a knife that size (good stainless would work perfectly, too). If you're willing to broaden your search to other non-stainless steels you'll find quite a few options in that size range.

-ESEE Izula. 1095 steel, great company. There are micarta handle slabs available for it. Lovely little drop point.

-Bark River Micro Drop Point, really nice EDC knife (I think it's in 52100).

-Koster Scout, excellent all around EDC blade in 3V.

-Bark River Mini Canadian, great little knife in A-2.

The Izula is probably the best bang for your buck, but if your budget allows it I think the Koster is nicer.

Check out JK Handmade Knives on his sub-forum (link below). He doesn't have a 2.5" knife (AFAIK - but see the 2 3/4" knife below), but loves to do custom work and can make one to your specs, your choice of handles, liners, pins, etc. He uses O1 steel and makes a very nice knife. Check out his sub-forum and start a thread or drop him an email. Great guy to do business with. :)

That said, he does make a 2 3/4" knive (that is 2.5"ish, right? ;) ) called the "The Potawatomi Slim Necker" that is very nice and comes in your choice of 1/4" or 5/8" thickness - again plus your choice of handles & more.

Best of luck finding the knife you want. :)
