Suggestions for a trapper with drop point and wharncliffe blades?

Hi folks,

This is probably my 2nd post in this sub forum since I've joined and I think my 1st was an accident. I'm getting all tacticalled out now and am interested in getting my first non-SAK slippie. Well I take it back, I still like tacticools, but I also appreciate a real man's knife now, the slippie:). I like the trapper style, but if possible, I'd like one of the blades to be a wharnie. Are there any decent slippies like this in the $60ish range? The lower priced the better for now.

Thanks

That's exactly what I was looking for. I thought I saw some Case trappers with the wharnie blade. Thanks:thumbup:

I have one of those full size Case Wharncliffe Trappers. Its one of my favorite slippies, only narrowly edged out by my Case Chestnut CV Trapper. ;)

The Case wharnies caught my eye too. I just wish there was a size between tiny and mini... one's a bit too small, the other's a bit too big for what I want it for (Watch pocket carry, supplementing a locking folder for light tasks and for dressing up). 3 inches would be perfect.

If you like the Trapper style, there is also the mini trapper.
I'm probably in the minority but I prefer the mini over the full size.
Big enough to do most tasks and still small enough to be very comfortable in pocket

I like the Case mini as well - at 3 1/2 inches closed it is the perfect carry size. Same size as Tony Bose's Wharncliffe Trapper. The blades have half-stops and it feels just right in the hand. The orange smooth bone looks great. Don't accidently order the "tiny" though - at 2 1/2 inches its smaller than a peanut. When I was ordering I had to keep checking what I was doing because in my mind "mini" and "tiny" are kind of interchangeable!

Here's what Tony Bose has to say about his "mini":

"This Wharncliffe trapper is the pattern that I carry. For me this combination is the handiest for everyday chores.
I started making it about 2- years ago". The knife is simply perfection!!

I'll say there are lots of fantastic makers on board here. Check out the pics in the knife makers for sale section. If you see photos of a maker whose work you consistently like I recommend you write them and see what they can do to meet your needs. It works!

Very true but I don't think he'll find too many fantastic makers building a wharncliffe trapper for $60 or less which was the OP's price point. ;)

While not a Trapper, there's the Case SwayBack Jack CV Chestnut with Wharncliffe main blade. Mine measures about 3 3/16" & I have a Case mini Copperhead in red stag with Wharncliffe main blade. That measures about 3 1/8" (It isn't a Jack or Trapper design, though).

I like the size of Case's mini-Trapper, but agree that the tiny just too small. Of course, that's me as it's many people like the Peanut & that's about the same size, isn't it?

Ah yes I missed that detail after getting all worked up over sweet little wharncliffe trappers. :D

Another option - an option I've exercised twice - is to buy a good carbon steel bladed user that has one or two broken blades, and re-profile them, or have them re-profiled by someone here. I did that to an old U.S. Schrade Muskrat that had both blades damaged, and got two nice 'Wharnies' out of the deal. It's one of my favorite users right now.
