My buddy who I've been friends with since we were 5 enlisted and so for his birthday coming up I thought I would buy him some new toys. I was thinking of a spyderco military with black coating and Sog seal pup elite for fixed blade.

So basically what would you guys recommend be good? He will most likely be hard on these knives but I want him to have very dependable stuff. So I'll take any ideas thanks.

Wait til he graduates from his training and gets to his unit. Don't want to waste your money on a knife he won't be allowed to carry.

+1

Unit knife policies vary greatly. Your idea is great and I'm sure he'll appreciate it, but wait until he reaches his duty station and get some feedback from him.

Thanks for the responses. His goal is Ranger school so I will wait to see if he gets through.

I just made a butterfly knife for a Ranger. I was infantry.

his mos will influence what he will find useful. if he abuses knives the military has a pretty dainty tip

I find the most use out of my Izula when training.

It would be an ESEE 4, though if I was able to use it without getting caught though.

Honestly, I used my multitool 100 times more often than I ever used a dedicated blade during my time in service. Something to consider.

The PX has all the knife he needs - when he's allowed to go to one that does stock knives. They carry the brands you mentioned, but usually at prices that won't break his bank. Often cheaper than the internet.

It's actually a low priority tool at the individual level - MRE comes with a tear open bag, all the internal pouches are preclipped to tear, too. All the battery pouches for gear, same. Cans of food come pop top on post. Can opener isn't even issue anymore.

A cheap pair of EMT shears will do 95% of what a small knife would, such as cut paracord, or trim threads off a uniform. SAK's have those, too. With a multitool for pliers and screwdrivers, and EMT scissors for the rest, it's nearly all done.

Thanks guys for the info and replies. I think I will solve the problem by getting him a leatherman surge and that way at the least stop stealing mine haha.

As a former Infantry/RIP, I can strongly recommend a Leatherman. Much more useful in the field. I'd go with that and a small folder, maybe a Delica. Forget the fixed, most units will not allow it anyway. He will have to give up whatever he has for basic/AIT (if he's infantry), jump school and RIP, so don't spend too much money. When I was in the cadre would hold it for you while in training, but stuff gets lost all the time.
