Ran by Pops today and saw they were sold out. Dang! It's been my go-to stainless steel forever. Got two bars left but given my orders....I need to be making plans for a suitable substitute. The majority of my orders are hunters/fishermen....I doubt they'd go for the cost increase with say, Magnacut, etc.

Read awhile back someone was taking over CPM154 production...suppose that fizzled out.

What's working for yall? 14C28N was suggested. Saw where edge retention wasn't quite what 154 had.

TruGrit RWL is 105 a three-foot bar . That's about as close as you can get. AEB-L is a lot cheaper but not the edge holder. It is probably tougher for a cheap stainless.

CPM-154 will have a bit more wear resistance than the AEB-L/NitroV/14c28N class of steels, but the latter 3 are tougher.

If wear resistance is a concern, S34VN/S45VN would be an upgrade over CPM154, but harder to polish to a high finish, if that's your thing.

I’ve have a back order with Admiral steel for around a month now. Last time I spoke with them it was supposed to be in last week, but still no word. I’m going to call them next week to see if there’s anything update. obviously Crucible shut down but Niagara steel is making it and I assume that’s where Admiral will be getting it now. CPM154 is my favorite stainless steel I’ve been using it for years. As for a replacement steel, I haven’t looked down that road yet.

I use to use CPM154 but then switched to 14c28n, mostly due to cost. It’s definitely easier to grind hard than CPM154. There’s plenty of great knives in both types of steel.
I’ll be interested to hear your decision

$140 for 1/8" by 1.5"? No thanks. Twice what I paid two months ago. I'll probably go with S35VN. Sticking with PSF27 for carbon.
Always higher priced buying directly from NSM
I bought a sheet of MagnaCut directly from Niagara Specialty Metals and it's less expensive buying by the sheet/pound.

Bought a couple of 14C28N bars but afterwards read some reviews. Sounds ok but not outstanding. Looking for S35VN and it's gone as well. Checked a number of places online....O-U-T.

I'll probably get a lot of hate for this, but I really like 440C. It doesn't have the same edge retention as CPM 154, but I really like it.

XHP is also a good option though it is a bit pricey and may not have long term availability

Hi Everyone,

It’s been a wild few months with Crucible shutting down and us shifting our supply to new mills. The good news is everything’s running smoothly. The quality from Erasteel, Carpenter Technology and Prime Metals has been excellent.

We know strips have been hard to find — that’s about to change. Our completely revamped online store launches next week with live inventory, simpler navigation, and updated pricing. If you’ve ordered from us before, you’ll notice a big improvement.

Our distributors will usually have better pricing based on their volumes, but they don’t always stock every grade or size. Since we maintain a full inventory, you’ll always be able to find what you need directly from us.

Thanks for your patience and continued support.
