I will be heading to the Mojave next week: driving in and setting up a base came and then day hiking for a few days. Along with lots of water, a day's worth of food and SAK Champ, my day pack will have the following:

Signal Mirror
Mylar Space Blanket
Fox 40
Photon II
Surefire E2e
Bic Lighter
Matches
Basic First Aid Kit
Compass
20' of paracord

I figure in a worst case senario help would be no more than a day away - I will be camping with a bunch of friends With the above gear, I figure I can stay warm and sheltered for a night, signal my location, build a fire and not go too hungary.

So: have I missed anything?

Any suggestions as to what else to pack along would be most appreciated.

thhanks!.

I typed in a big reply, and the stinken computer(?) lost it.

This is a good time to see the desert, due to the "mild" temperatures. Do not get lost, wear high-topped boots and wide-brimmed hats, and have some fun.

The wildflowers are out, but there is no water here.

Cheers

Hat, gloves, sunglasses.

Multi-tool (or pliers) since heaven forfend, cactus spines can be way too big for tweezers.

For fun - field guides, bino's, camera, etc.

Perform a seach, " 10 essentials ", add the missing parts to your kit. And don't forget the toilet paper. I usually carry enough food for two days minimum, considering your location.....water. A tarp, some string, and a walking stick are handy to set up a shelter.

Have a great time!

camera and film too.

Should be a great time for a dessert outing...I'm envious.
One thing I would add is a combination smoke signal/airial flare.
They have limited use in heavely forrested areas but, work great in the open enviroment of the dessert. They weigh very little and aren't very expensive. You can find them in most places that sell boating supplies.
Have a great time...

Add to the said gear a Camelbak HAWG(Holds Alot Of Water&Gear)and make sure its water bladder is full!!!;)

I'd also add a CMG Infinity. Gets 41 hours out of Alkaline, 100 hours out of Lithium. Sufficient for around camp.

Take at least 4 if not 6 extra 123's for the Surefire. May help keep some critters away, or at least let you know where they are...

A second (or third) knife can't hurt either.

MHO, YMMV

Recon you could try a transpiration water gathering exercise? If so, then maybe a big plastic bag?

When I lived in Los Angeles (35 years), I was out in the Mojave, quite a few times. There are often some very strange people out there and you'd never catch me in that vast, lonely desert without a firearm... or two.

Just a suggestion. L.W.

I grew up in the Sonora.

Bring as much water as you can, this will be your limiting factor. One of those plastic lemons with lemon juice in it will reduce your water consumption, just a couple drops in your mouth now and then will get the spit back up. Long needle-nose pliers to pull the jumpin cactus (cholla) out of you. A pistol.

My time in the Mojave was spent at Ft. Irwin. I don't recall seeing alot of trees or even woody shrubs around. Unless you want to pack in some fuel, I wouldn't count on building a fire for warmth.
