Hey all,

I'm working gradually on making my first knife out of a file (since I heard that's what you do for your first knife). I'm trying to find out what the best grind is (note that I'm using really basic tools--4.5" grinder, really crappy hand belt sander, hand tools) for a file knife. I'm doing a really really basic shape and so forth.

Turns out it's fairly challenging, so any tips would be good. Also, what tool/bit do you need to drill holes for the handle scales? Thanks in advance for your suggestions and assistance. It's a fun project, but definitely challenging.

You might get some answers here, but you'd probably get better answer in the Knife Making forum.

I'm in the same boat, but my route might be a bit easier since I'm using un-heat treated 1095. I plan on doing most of the grinding with a bench grinder and setting the primary with a file and file guides.

Wasn't sure if I'm allowed to put threads there, since I'm strictly amateur, and those guys are all paid makers it seems.

FFG is far too hard for me, I think. I was shooting for a low flat grind, but I think it turned into a convex. Still not sure how I'm going to drill the holes for my handle slabs though.
