Anybody done anything with this yet? I would like to use the hollowed handles for storing some emergency/survival items, but not sure what. I thought of matches, any other bright ideas?

A small firesteel with a bit of dryer lint coated in candle wax.
I found a firesteel at walmart for 9$ it is cased in a metal rectangle which is a little big for an altiods tin, so i used a hammer and flathead screwdriver and whalaa. the rod pop'd right out and was no problem to use, saves space may save your skin a time or two.
Fishing kit.
sewing kit
I carry a stix of hot glue in my repair kit. Just heat with a flame and you have an all purpose leak stoper light shoe repair...hook making ....on ...on and on.
dream up the uses.
puro-tabs...you need that somewhat clean water.
all that could fit, and you are set.

I really like that idea. I'm going to have to add it to my emergency pack.

how about something necessary for knife maintenance... like a fine diamond rod and a bit of silicone rag... so you can whipe down your knife and sharpen it.

If you like firesteels, look around. There are some that are like 1/8" x 1 1/2" around. You might try going gear for some. I had a couple that I got with a big 3/8" x 4" one on the bay.

Not sure if a wire saw would work, the rings might be too big to fit into the handle, but some snare wire would work, also some sort of pocket fishing equipment (hooks, line, etc.) would work well I think.

You might want to put those in a plastic bag so they don't rattle or stuff with left over paracord pieces to keep things from moving around and making noise when you walk.
