I have my knives in one of those plastic drawer sets that you buy at walmart. It works fine, but I'm running out of space and I would also like something that I can put a lock on so nobody can get into it. I have a collection of about thirty knives, most of which are medium to large folding tactical knives and a few smaller knives. I'm looking for something that costs around $40 or less any suggestions would be appreciated.

I know you said $40 but I just got a Pelican Case 1550 with the foam and it works great it travels well fire proof, water proof and it has a O ring seal that keeps all air and moisture out. It has to 2 holes for locks and Pelican has so many sizes my case is a good size for my apartment and I just it pick right up and bring it back to my hometown when I get a break from college. There are plenty of videos online for pelican and a few for putting Knives actually in the case like me. I bought mine from amazon for under $150, I believe it's worth it but I have a small collection of 25 knives like spyderco, benchmade, ZT, CRK, Esee and more but I will end getting smoothing bigger when my collection gets bigger. I use mine for mostly folders but if you want you can lay fix blades under the foam like I do with my Esee-5 but good luck looking.

I've been looking into Pelicans too. How many Ka-bar sized fixed blades can it fit?

I feel like a lot of foam is being wasted if I lay the knives horizontally across the foam beds -- knives are hardly over an inch at their widest, so 7 inches of foam underneath is going to waste. Alternatively, I've considered the Pelican 1750, but that's still 6inches of wasted foam.

Just pick up a regular old tool box from Sear, Harbor Freight or what have you. I have one I use for storage that cost me $39.99 and works just fine. The latch is also made so you can put a padlock on it nd the drawers will not open if the lid is closed.

A nice case full of nice knives makes for an easy burglary target IMO as they're all packed in a fancy case, ready to be scooped up never to be seen again. :thumbdn:

I prefer my knives locked away, hidden and inconspicious... very low profile if ya know what I'm saying. There's many storage options out there and you're only limited by your creativity (and budget of course) in terms of home-brew storage, hidden compartments etc.

That's a really nice toolbox and a great idea I think I'll look into it.

I also used the plastic drawers for a while but quickly grew out of them. I found this at a local auction. I love the age and character it has. I lined the drawers with faux leather. It has a lot of storage and looks great on my dresser I think. If you look around you can find good deals on these as well as antique metal tool boxes, which I also have for other storage, they look really nice and were made with excellent quality back then. I guess I have a thing for antique boxes. Plus, this is technically locking storage (if I had the key for it) :)

Emphasis should be on security and keeping the knives out of sight. You're not going to find much of a safe for $40, but perhaps an old metal steamer trunk with a padlock hasp?

A Pelican case with a padlock or a tackle box?!? Anyone, even a child, can pick the whole thing up and carry it off!

Are you handy with a table saw and hammer? $40 buys enough lumber to build a nice wooden cabinet with a locking door. Not as secure as a safe or a Craftsman toolbox, but you can nail it down and it'll at least keep anyone from casually walking off with your collection.

Not the prettiest solution, but how about an ammo can. Rig it with a padlock and screw it to the floor in a closet.

I wonder what a used filing cabinet would cost?

Thats why I also keep a lock with a thick metal cord/wire connecting my pelican case to a bolt in my big wooden desk so its not as easy as just picking it up it would take at least a little while to break it away plus we have a security system so its a good fit for me.

That's such a beautiful box I would love to find something like that.

Well unfortunately I live in a duplex so I don't have a garage and can't keep my table saw here otherwise I would try and make something.

If you like that you can look at Machinist chests. They are typically wooden with many felt or leather lined drawers. They are not cheap but Harbor Freight sells a budget model (I have one) that is about double your $40 budget. Sometimes they can be had for less on sale. I used mine for knife storage but decided I wanted something a little more rugged and modern.

For your best 6 knives. This was an eyeglass case from Amazon $50. Now I'm looking at a tie case (holds 18) on amazon. I look for cases designed for other things, that will fit knives.
