I'm looking to try a new modern folder. I am willing to spend up to $400. I do not want any of the "normal" brands like ZT, Benchmade, Spyderco, CRK, Strider, Hinderer, etc. And I want to keep the knife to around 4" closed. Suggestions? Thanks in advance.

Falknivin U2 -- most known for fixed blade but the U2 is worth looking at.

Would Lionsteel count as a common brand? Because the SR2 fits your specs.

Nick beat me to it. Lionsteel isn't discussed that often here (at least not in GenPop).

MCUSTA makes some very cool - and different - knives. And they're not super expensive, so for your budget, you could get two!! Here's a couple of mine (machined Aluminum and Amboynia burl):

Notice tho', you're stuck with right-hand tip-down carry. But that works for me - YMMV.

What about Microtech and ProTech? I have a very nice Les George ProTech Rockeye. Of course, it's an automatic.

Southern Grind Bad Monkey. Three Sisters Forge Gorgon!

Brous Caliber and Sinner are both close to 4" closed. I don't have a Sinner, but the Caliber I have has excellent F&F. It does have an extremely hard detent though, so it's pretty much impossible to open it slowly. If you look around a bit the satin Caliber can be had for $330 new.

Mcusta, Southern Grind, Pohl Force, Lion Steel, Knife Research are a few that come to mind.

DPX Hest folder or wait another month and look at the Southern Grind Spider Monkey!

I always suggest Fantoni when questions like this are asked. Here's mine, I think it's pretty.

Also, you can read the review I wrote here if you want http://centergnome.blogspot.com/2014/12/fantoni-hb-02-review-first-impressions.html

Lot of good recommendations here. I look forward to seeing what J-siah comes out with.
