I'm having trouble identifying many knives with a beefier blade than the case trapper. I'm looking for something about the size of a Madison Barlow or Becker Large Copperhead or even something bigger.

Browse the traditional forum and you will find many examples.

Some that immediately come to mind would be the GEC #23, 42, #72, or #73. You've already mentioned one of the best (i.e. Northwoods Madison Barlow). Then there's the Buck 110, an old standard.

Yeah I know the Madison is awesome. I emailed you about yours yesterday! The trouble I have with browsing forums and looking at pictures is that it is extremely hard to getan idea of the scale or size you are looking at. As in, without an object of reference, a peanut can look likethe size of a buck 110.

Thanks for the suggestions though.

The Backpocket pattern is pretty big. Check out Case's offerings

For something a little different maybe a Helle lockback? They are Scandi grinds, very nice overall. I recently picked up the Skala model.

Where did you get the Skala? I've been trying to get a hold of one for a while! How do you like it?

I picked mine up at Blade HQ. I like it, very smooth, came sharp too. Very comfortable in use. The op mentioned "or even something bigger" and these definitely qualify. :)

The skala is not what I am looking for but man that's a very nice and unique knife. That's going to go on the short list!

In regards to the back pocket, I forgot about that one. It is big. Its ironic that is called the back pocket but is too big for a back pocket. The thing that I don't like about the case knives is that the blades are never tall enough for my liking. Although the GEC 72 is way shorter, the blade is a lot taller, beefier, and much better looking ....minus the engravings on the blade.

Check out the GEC 42 and 23. The Queen Mountain Man is about the same size. Moore Maker also has some large models that look pretty nice. If you really want big (like Freakin Huge!), AG Russell has some very well made large patterns. They're made overseas though, which sucks, but the build quality is fantastic. Check out the Cowboy and Large Folding Hunter.

The GEC #42 (Missouri Trapper) is precisely the same size as the Madison Barlow (and a trapper pattern). The two blade version is thicker and heavier, but it is one of my EDC knives carried in a KSF leather slip case.

The #23 is another 1/4" larger. I find it too large for pocket carry. It is a great knife however.

The Queen Mountain Man is another great knife mentioned above.

Good to know about the #42 being the same size as the Madison Barlow. I was eyeing that 42 and liking it quit a bit before I knew that.

Can anyone confirm that the etching on the blades can easily be fully removed. I've seen many different methods of attempting to remove an etch and more often than not it requires doing some heavy grinding. I can't imagine the etch is that shallow that it can be removed with 120 grit sand paper, let alone car polish.

The two blade #42 is a beefy folder and a handful, but not quite what the #23 is. I really like it. I have it in a jigged bone and intend to pick up one in stag eventually. My elephant ivory Madison is so nice that I hate to use it.

The etching will wear off eventually. I believe flitz should take it off if you are so minded. I wouldn't use anything much more aggressive myself.
