So here's what it's come down to...

Seal Pup (serrated) w/ Zytel sheath. - 56 bucks
Seal Pup Elite (plain edge) w/ Nylon sheath (nice because I have a SOG multi tool and this sheath accommodates it as well) 62 bucks
Northwest Ranger - I love the look/feel of this knife, but I'm wondering how rugged it is in comparison.

The blade stock is thicker on the Seal Pup Elite, but some have suggested saving 10 bucks and going with the standard Pup. Is the NW Ranger blade as rugged in AUS 6 instead of the Elites AUS 8?

This knife would be used for digging, light chopping, shelter building, and game/fishing cleaning.

I've read tons of reviews on both knives, and the only thing people really comment on is the Zytel handle on the Seal Pup over the softer Krayton handle on the Northwest Ranger.

If you needed an all around wilderness work knife, which would you go for?

Brother,

This is what you need...

I'd get the SEAL Pup Elite. Great quality, and you can stash your multitool in the pouch. That's what I did with mine and I have everything I need in one package now.

I'd get the plain edge Seal Pup Elite. I have both the kydex and nylon sheaths. I put a large (read, thick and heavy) SAK in the nylon sheath also. Sometimes use the original kydex if I want something a little less bulky.

I have a NW Ranger too. It was my first SOG. Honestly speaking, I bought it to use hunting or general woods carry. Then I got a Field Pup. (I thought, yep, this will be my hunting knife.) Then I got a Tech I. Then I got a Tech II. Then I got a Tiger Shark (actually two, partially serrated and the non-serrated earlier version). Then the Revolver Hunter... Then I got the Seal Pup Elite last year. To make a long story short, the NW Ranger has never been used. I use the Seal Pup Elite and it should work fine for what you want. It is my go-to knife in a fixed blade these days.
