Hi guys,
One of my coworkers is looking for a medium fixed hunting knife for her son and I've been tasked with procuring.

...I made the mistake of showing her my Olamic Voykar and now she's obsessed with that knife. She wants something with a bone handle (not a hard requirement I dont think) and price to float around low 100$. She wants it to look as close to the voykar as possible...my bad.

Anyway, while I scrounge the internet, would appreciate any pointers from my friends at BF. Here is a picture of my voykar for reference.

As always, I appreciate everyone's time.

Well that’s a tall order… not many knives look like that Olamic.

The first thing that jumps to mind in that ~100 dollar bracket is a venerable Buck 119. That only problem is I’ve never seen one in bone.

Another option that jumps to mind is some custom Puuko’s which are outfit in horn handles. Some have guards and might make respectable hunting knives. I’ll send you a link to a dealer (not sure if he’s a BF sponsored dealer),

There’s a gentleman here, JJSmith, who makes hunting knives that are a little above that budget, but are nice knives. You might talk to him about bone slabs.

The only other thing I’ll note is that if he wants to use the knife for hunting, there’s some schools of thought that anything longer than about a 3 inch blade makes it hard to use in field dressing. I don’t know that personally, but from videos I’ve seen of people gutting a deer, it seems to make sense.

Try a search for Nazarov knives. Similar style, affordable.

Don't own one, though, so can't speak to quality.

Appreciate everyone's reply, I'll get some pictures over to her and see which one she likes (she's head of HR and very stubborn...don't tell her I said that).

Here are some other ones I will include.
Edit: oops sorry that teddy pic was from the exchange, gotta give knifeknut knifeknut credit.

It looks like your Olamic is a little over 5". I looked in the 5-6" range in my first post. Is 4" or 4.5" an option? Over 6" ( :D )?

Leather sheath a must?

Again, not much in bone but some in classic wood handles in the 4.5" to 5" range.

Not sure what 440 they run and how they do their HT but Muela seems to have a good rep from what I've read. It does look good.

Personally, I think the brown micarta looks good. YMMV.

Maybe Joker. The price range will limit the options, but there are good knives out there.

I don't hunt, but I read most actual hunters go for schmedium lengths around 4-5in, anything big gets unwieldy in deer...I don't know if there's any truth in that but from "skinning" alot of fish I would say around 5in is where I'd like it.

Yeah I wasn't familiar with joker and muela until I did this search, they look very nice for the price. If she likes the voykar, then she's probably more about the asthetics of the blade...functionality secondary.

Thanks guys!!

I wonder if the son has reached that age like we were obsessed with the look and coolness of knife rather than the practical use of it, like back in the 80s when we were teenagers we all wanted hollow handled Rambo type knives. At least the Jokers and Muelas, Bokers, and Bucks look traditional and are still functional.

cbach8tw cbach8tw raises a good point. Mom might be concerned with pretty, but son might appreciate performance > pretty. Yes, ideally, you get both at the same time.

Dergyll Dergyll spin your magic and edumacate the lady about knives!
Dude did you miss the part about her being the head of HR? Last time I edumacated her was about how to pull security camera footage in the presence of 2 cops and 1 detective...all the while she's couldn't stop talking to them about how I had alot of big knives...turns out someone was pulling catalytic converters out of a nearby parking lot at a regular basis lol.

Anyway haha, I talked her out of the bone and stag part. She's looking at wood and leather now. She really likes the kabars, but I'm not sure they'll make the best hunting knives.

Cheers guys, happy Friday

BPS knives.....made in Ukraine, you can find them easily on the Amazon, quality is way above the price point....which is well under $100.....
This one is the Adventurer, 5 1/2" blade, walnut slabs, 1066 steel, 8oz leather sheath.....
