I have been looking to get a camping knife, and don't know where to start. I don't want to spend over 50. Is it possible to get a good knife for that price?

Hi,

Welcome!!

It's very easy to get an inexpensive camp knife. For a fixed blade I personally like the humble Mora knives. They are Swedish made and available in plain carbon steel or stainless steel. They can be had for under $20. Teamed with a Swiss Army knife of your choice, you would be pretty well set.

You can spend more money, but I think it's pretty hard to get a better value than these two knives.

You might be able to find a good knife for that price but we need some more info from ya. What size? Steel? intended uses?

Another vote for the mora. They're recomended by too many people who know what they're talking about to overlook them. Cody Lundin and Mors Kochanski to name a few.

Too many

But its like the knives in the block in your kitchen - the right knife depends on the purpose - and even in a kitchen we use several

- Chopper? min 6 inch, heavy and thick (ka bar fighting knife or bigger, CS Bushman, small machete, axe, hawk)
- Food prep and wood carving - smaller 4-6 inch blade - (Mora, canadian style knifei.e grohman - great for dicing)
- Survival - impromptu anything 4-6 inch blade but heavier (fallkniven F1 - but that is pricey, sog seal pup - but a tactical look, RAT)

and art - what you like - which is probably the deciding factor for most or us - otherwise we would all use Mora's, Grohman boat knives, or CS bushman

And frankly most people will carry a folder as well either a single blade like a benchmande mini griptillian of a Swiss Arm Knife (SAK), or a multi tool

To do everything you need several eged devices - google nessemuk trio (?) for one well known woodsman's combination. Fudo just gave a good modern version of it

Hope this helps

another vote for a Mora! they have many variations, great price and a good blade to start with and more.

ragweedforge is a good place to look ;)

4 votes for a Mora knife! I suggest the Laminated steel versions (with wood handles -still under $20). They do everything very well -except abuse.

For a knife you can abuse the Cold Steel [Bowie] Bushman is nice. It can really take a beating and survive -it bends before it breaks in my experience. It is inexpensive too.

Wally World carries the Buck 110 'Folding Hunter' for <$30 - that's a hard act to follow for typical camping chores. For a fixed blade, they have Buck's 119 'Special' - even better, although it's a sheath carried 6.5" blade.

I'm not sure what kind of knife you are exactly looking for, but for general purposes, I would also recommend a Mora knife and a SAK. They are cheap, but good quality.
