I am looking for a good knife for police work. Currently I have a spyderco police model but it has seen its better days. What I am looking for is not a knife for prying and using as a screw driver but I am looking for something that I can use as a back up to protect myself. I have seen many of the knives like the new TDI knife designed by Ka-bar but I didn't like it since it had to be attached to my belt. I would prefer something with a fixed blade over a folder. Any help or suggestions out there would be greatly appreciated.

Since you are wearing a tucked-in shirt, how else are you going to carry a fixed blade for backup except on your belt? There are pocket clipped sheaths, but you can't fit much of a fixed-blade comfortably or with high enough accesbility in your pocket. I'm afraid you'll have to live with a folder.

Neck knife.....Buck/Hartsook 860 ,S30V,1/2 oz.4 1/4 oal,blade 1 7/8
Model # 860B cat # 5900 about $25.00

I either wear an Emerson la Griffe or a Becker necker (BK-11) while I'm on duty.

I learned a trick from a biker about 15 years ago. He wore a Buck folder in a sheath on his belt. The Buck was tack welded shut. He called it the sucker knife. He carried 2 boot knives. Iv'e carried several different knives over the years but settled on carying 2 plus a sucker. My choice is a CRKT M-16 for abuse and a Protech Godfather for a backup carried in front left and right pocket. Practice, Practice, Practice. On pat down. If you find one knife always look for a second.

I suggest getting another Spyderco Police, I know a few Cops that carry them and love it. but if you do want a fixed blade, I say get the Benchmade Nimravus.

I find my Leatherman Supertool to be far more useful than a pocket knife on duty. That being said, I carry a large Cold Steel Voyager in my trousers pocket. I also carry a Cold Steel push dagger. I sewed the dagger's sheath to the trauma plate pocket on the front of my vest, then I concealed it under the fabric from an old trauma plate pocket. I attached the fake one with velcro so that I can rip it away and get at the knife in an instant. Fortunately, I've never needed a knife for defense in 22 years as a Police Officer.

Emerson CQC7. Or other Emerson with the "wave" feature. If you're not familiar, it's like having a fixed blade knife in your pocket. Pulling the knife in a manner that drags the "waved" top portion of the blade, automatically locks it in "open" position right out of the pocket. Ready for action. Faster than an automatic. Front or back pocket, boot or cargo pocket - there is even a special sheath to facilitate the this feature. A cheaper alternative to this would be the CRKT M16 'SF' series. The "finger guard" acts in the same manner as the 'wave' - by dragging it along the edge of a pocket, it will deploy as it is pulled out. Cheaper you say? Look at the Boker Plus Armed Forces Tanto I and II. I only suggest these as they are quick to deploy right out of the pocket and are faster/cheaper alternative to automatics.

I'm curious about why you would want to weld your knife shut? And why the name "sucker knife"?

cuz that's the knife the bad guy would go for in a fight...sucker!!:D

I agree with the Leatherman suggestion as a tool and you should have one in your belt. The Surge blade is large enough and you end up with a bunch of other tools, actually you have 2 blades and can deploy them both one handed. The Charge has a 154cm main blade (is a tad smaller than the Surge but is basically the same layout) and has a pocket clip so you can carry it as a clip knife. As a police officer you can carry in your duty belt and look like part of the gear.

As a weapon, it depends on you knife fighting school. The cold steels are cheap and good, you break one and it does not hurt to replace. Voyagers for folders and the master hunter for fixed they don't look too ninja like and are stainless so you don't have to worry about maintenance. For carbon steel check the RAT-3 from ontario in 1095. Spyderco Manix has proven a MEGA SOLID folder and has premium steel (S30V). If you have the money a Fallkniven F1 or H1, both are really strong handy designs that do not look evil (check the reviews). Are you a rural or city Police Officer? I have limited options to no more than 4" due to the image of carrying a large knife that may scare people off.

The bad guy tries to take away the welded knife, so you can pull out the real knife and stick him. Sneaky sneaky! Thanks for the info!

Still gives the other guy a weapon, though. :D

For a neck-knife, look at the new Cold Steel Urban Dart...it's got a nice utilitarian blade, its wicked-looking, scary sharp and easy to conceal...a folder? I don't like the edge retention of VG-10, so I'd go with a Spyderco Miliary (with the S30V blade, black-coated...S30V seems to corrode like a mother for me) or a Cold Steel X2 Voyager with the 6-inch clip point blade---it can do everything a fixed blade will and it fits in your pocket. If you're leaning towards a fixed blade, go for a Strider WP ($175, www.truenorthknives.com), or a Cold Steel Master Hunter with a San Mai III laminated steel blade---that's a great one. :D

How about a paddle?

That's a Blackhawk Kalista, btw. They go on e-bay for about 113 bucks.

I've carried a Manix on duty from the time they were released until a month ago when I discovered the Endura 4. Both worked well for me.

Benchmade 520 presidio. Or the auto version, 5000.

Rock solid axis lock up. Absolutely no slip aluminum handle scales. Tank of a knife.

Consider a small fixed blade secured behind the mag pouch... concealed & accessible by either hand. A hole punch and small zip-ties work well in securing it. Fumbling with any kind of opener isn't practical under stress.
