Alright guys I need some help. I need suggestions on a small fixed blade I can wear horizontally by my back. I'm looking for something that won't be cumbersome and allow me to move about freely. When I hike I like to go light, gives me more freedom. I was thinking about a Becker necker with a tek lok. Any additional suggestions out there? Your feedback is greatly appreciated.

Tops makes several smaller models. Their kydex sheath with rotating spring clip would be ideal for horizonal carry.

Swamp Rat Rat Tail or Howling Rat. They're better made and much tougher than the Becker, and excellent value for the money.

Thanks guys. I've been looking into Tops. I have their smokejumper. I was thinking about the wolfpup XL. Swamp Rat is an option, however the Rat tail doesn't come with a sheath? What would be my options? Or does Swamp Rat offer one at an additional charge? Thanks again for the feedback.

TOPS makes a great blade. I had a guy come to the house to look at a Operation Badger last week. He took one look at the Tom Brown Tracker though and decided to have that. He came last night for a C.A.T too.

The Internet really doesnt do them justice and the photots on TOPS site could be a lot better.

Have you though of a Handmade Knife? I bet you could get one in a good steel and with a sheath of choice (Normark, Jamie Briggs, BLGoode) all make sheaths if the maker does not offer one, some don't (Like R Linger). I have found the makers prices here to be very reasonable and as long as you don't want Zebra Damascus they shouldnt be too expensive either. Have a look in the Knives for Sale in the Makers section.

I would not take the Becker necker for hiking. With the blade of the necker it´s hard to carve, it´s almost impossible.

Pherhaps a Mora 2000 would be a good choice. It´s light, robust enough, cuts everything well and you can carve with it.

The handle of it is good, too.

I use a Benchmade Nimarvus exactly that way. I bought a sheath fromSurvival Sheath which came with a tec-lock that could be positioned a number of ways. It works quite nicely and is very comfortable.

My advise is to focus on a good afordable knife and get a sheath made for it. You will like the total package better that way. Here is one I made but I found it a pain to resheath. Not advertizing for myself but there are great sheath makers out there! Use them ;)

when i am hiking i like to put my knife on the strap of my backpack upside down. it doesnt get in the way at all and it is easy to get to.

'nother vote for a Howling Rat !!!

Those blades are bullet proof, not too heavy... cut great.

Can't go wrong !!!

Cheers,

David

Rats are better blades than TOPS hands down . Better steel warranty etc etc...

TOPS blades will cut certainly but for equal or less money you actually get a better knife with Swamp Rat.

Focus on the blade first and worry about the sheath later.

I like the swamp rats,I just got a Howling rat- Fat,which means instead of being 3/16" thick it is 1/4" thick, same blade just thick and alot of meat :D

Take look at the fallkniven f1. on scene tactical makes a great kydex sheath that can be worn in any position. In total I dropped around $120 for the knife and sheath. The F1 is the best bang for the buck in my opinion. I butchered two deer this year with mine and never had to touch it up even after taking joints and the pelvis apart. A great deal.

Agreed that the F1 is also a great, great blade. I have one and I love it.

Cheers,

David

I've lately become a big fan of the Beckers, most of which are too big for your purposes. Good steel, sharp, cheap, but not crappy. The Becker Necker would work, though.

Fallkniven F1!!!!!!!!!! Buy it. If you don't like it (I can't imagine why) just sell it here.

Another vote for the Fallkniven F1 -- On/Scene Tectical Kydex combo. I just got my sheath in last week, and its the best kydex work I've ever seen.
