New to forum, seems to be a whole lot of knowledge contained here so I thought I'd pose this question........I'm going on an extended backpacking trip this Summer and want to get a new knife for this trip.....I'd like to hear suggestions on the best knife for my trip (in addition to anything that might pop up on the trip I'd also like something that won't have a problem cutting a good fillet from a fish)......I'm open to folders and fixed blades, just don't want something too big (for packing reasons) I'd appreciate any thoughts....thanks

The new Fallkniven H1 would be perfect. I am ordering one myself. Got a chance to handle one and I loved it. It resembles a high tech puuko. It's small, light, and inexpensive.

Hello and welcome!

I would second the recommendation for Falkniven. You should be able to find a size for you and the VG-10 steel is great for extended everyday use. It hold an edge, is tough, and is corrosion resistant. The Spyderco Moran fixed blade is another good choice. If you want a folder that acts like a fixed blade look at the AL-MAR SERE 2000. Good luck and take care!

Light folders that pack performance:
==============================
Spyderco Starmate
Spydero Military

The SERE is heavy duty, but heavy it is.

Fallkniven fixed blades are cost effective, high quality, and stout. I like the 4" drop point F1. But the 5" S1 and 6" A1 (which I also own) are dandy also.
