Hi everyone! I've recently got a job! (not so easy these days) and will have a bit of spending money in a few months. So I figured it was about time I treated myself to a nice knife. I'm thinking maybe a custom from the for sale area on here, but am also considering a really exceptional production knife. I'm looking for some suggestions! my desires are carbon steel (of course), stag, 1-2 blades (if 2, a jack or moose pattern) at roughly 3-4 inches closed. I know that's a pretty broad request, but I'm just looking for any random suggestions I can get. Thanks a lot gentlemen! Oh, and price wise I would like to keep it under 400 if possible. want to have some left over for a nice lagavulin 16 year ;) worth every penny if you haven't tried it before by the way.

hmmm..okay maybe I should narrow this down. I'm looking to try a moose or different jack pattern (peanut, serpentine, barlow or something like that). I'm certain I want stag since I've never had that before either. I have a gec harness jack but it doesn't appeal to me, the springs are way too strong and I've cut myself on it because of it. (not that it's really a big deal, i'd just rather not look like a fool).

Well, except for being ATS-34 or 154CM rather than carbon steel, several of the Case/Bose Collaboration knives would fit your wants (though stag may not be available for a few patterns). The Norfolk, Hawbaker muskrat, and dogleg jack patterns in particular -- and the coffin jack will be available shortly.

If I had $400 burning a hole in my pocket ;), and wanted a Jack pattern, I would no doubt about it try to find one of these:

It's made by Case, and called "TONY BOSE DAMASCUS DARK MOLASSES BONE DOG LEG TRAPPER" or something like that.

John Lloyd uses carbon steel in his custom knives. Since you have a few months to wait you might consider contacting him to see what he might be able to make for you.

Congrats on the new job!

Rick you beat me to it,
Jesse, don't pass by John, he's on the forum here...and look up the John Lloyd thread...
here it is http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/showthread.php/865981-John-Lloyd-Knives

Please read carefully and know just where John is with his knife making these days...his early ones are bloody good knives, todays ones are simply stunning.I think for your bang for buck, you just cannot go past this gentleman and his skill of knife making, also, I believe that his knives will command a lot higher pricing in times to come.
Please share with us when you make your decision, and especially when you have the knife in hand :)

John seems like a great guy! he's first on my list for sure..how does one go about ordering a custom knife anyway? I wont be doing so for a couple months but would be good to know.

Contact the maker by phone or email, discuss what you have in mind, find out if he can build what you want at or near your price point and get an approximate date for completion of your project.

(Alternatively, you can often find one in a more immediate fashion via listings here in the "Exchange"...both in the "knife makers" area as well as custom knives being sold by our members.)

If you want to try a production, well don't give up on GEC. They put out mostly very attractive stag and on the No.56 Dogleg Jack pattern you will find very pliant springs, no injuries from opening one of these.

thanks a lot! I'm going to give it a few months of thought, I like the idea of a hand made knife, and the options. Thanks a lot fellas! that gec stag is really nice willgoy! dogleg is a great pattern too.

Ok so didnt quite make it to the 2 month of thinking mark. Ordered a buffalo handled GEC #33 from tsa, looks like the perfect knife for me and just couldn't pass it up. Will post some pictures once I get it. Can't wait! Still plan on grabing one of Johns knives when I can of course.

33 Conductor is a really good small knife, so well finished and the blade is very credible. I hope your knife pleases you as much as mine does.
