I could use your help. I'm looking for a Stockman with the following:

  • 3 1/2" - 3 3/4" OAL
  • Wood or Bone scales

If you would be so kind, please recommend a maker/model for me to consider, and/or share pictures of any that you have that fit the description. I'm open to current and past production models. Thanks in advance.

The Calf Roper is actually a sixteenth under 3½", if that makes any difference. My favorites are the muskrat clip, slender serpentine stockmen at 3.5-3.6". All the ones I have are either Marbles or Rough Rider (Chinese imports) or USA Schrades. Because of the slender clip main, all these have the sheepfoot nick on the mark side and still simply disappear in the pocket because of the low riding blades.

From left: Marbles #269 brown stag bone, RR #476 brown sawcut bone, RR #501 imitation tortoise, RR #1155 armor hide bone, RR #441 burnt stag

I would like to try out the Calf Roper as well. One of my favorites is the Case 63032 in Chestnut bone with CV blades. It has a pen in place of the spey blade.

A second recommendation on the 63032 stockman from Case. A great size for the pocket. Also consider the Buck 301 Series; very good knives for the money. They get overlooked sometimes, but they are definitely worth looking over.

Case's amber bone 6318 can be had with cv blades. I think it's definitely worth a look.

Case Crandall Stockman with a swedged standard clip blade (as opposed to the typical California clip)....

That Crandall is sweet! Are these still available?

They're out of production, and I may have bought up what's left of the NOS Case Family Brands (Crandall, Platts, Kinfolks, Standard, etc) over the last year or so. The only ones I don't have are the Kane Cutlery line.

I will say that other than the GEC #66, I don't have a knife that fits your criteria (and according to Jeff, it doesn't even fit at that) but I'll suggest Queen's #26 Small Stockman at 3 3/8" closed. The reason I like this is that the secondary blades do not stick up high and it fits well in the pocket. The one I have is in Curly Zebra

Here is a comparison pick with a Case Peanut, Northwoods Mini Moose, the #26 and a Queen #21 Senator.

Nice knife, I just learned that I think the men that owned that company also used to own case I think. They use the same steel

Queen Rawhide series-beautiful wood scales but gappy frame.
Schrade + USA blue bone-

I think you made a fine choice, that Bloodwood looks a treat and the simplicity of the Tidioute finish really suits the pattern.

Hope you can show some pix as I don't think I've seen Bloodwood before.

Thanks, Will

Will - here's a couple pictures. I wasn't familiar with blood wood prior to ordering this, but have to say now that I've seen it in person, that I like it... a lot. :)

That does look very appealing indeed! Time and use will likely enhance it more. Thank you for showing it.
