Need some advice on picking a backpack for my BOB in the car, and for traveling around outside the US. I want something that is as heavy duty as most "tactical" packs are just sheeple friendly, I have a tactical tailor 3 day that I think is great.

I just want a pack that can be carried on the street and not look out of place. Especially overseas where the military look is not as in style as it is here. Thanks for any help.

BTW I have looked at some Oakley stuff and they are nice but some look too hardcore to blend it, plus thier bags just scream steal me.

If it's going to be in your car will it be out of sight like your trunk? I use those Outdoor Products duffels for car stuff. It's unobtrusive and heavy enough to knock around. Doesn't cost an arm and leg either. Been using their stuff for years with no problems. Never got stolen either.

Same goes for their backpacks. Also pick a color that doesn't stand out: no camo, red etc.

REI is always good. Maybe remove any expensive brand labels. That is a selling point for lots of stuff.

I had the same thoughts recently while re-packing my BOB , my pack is an Austrian rucksack , I like the style and the color (black) and it's very (with a capitol V) heavy duty , but my pack screams (I'm probably carrying weapons , please search me).
I've been looking around at various stores for a simple pack that doesnt stand out , I'm thinking of maybe hitting the thrift stores this weekend.

Thanks for the replies so far guys.

I found an old jansport, but the shoulder straps feel like they are going to tear right off. Will keep looking about.

"Solo Journey" By Eagle Creek. It is black, but being a convertible pack it looks citifed and can tuck the shoulder and hip straps into itself so they don't get caught in anything like doors or hinges.

I second The North Face backpacks, I have one that have been with me for more than 6 years, used almost everyday and It's still in GREAT condition, It's confortable, a lot of usefull pockets and overall high quality.

My GF recently gave a North Face Terra 50 as a gift for my birthday some weeks ago (http://www.gear-zone.co.uk/eshop/The-North-Face-Terra-50---AW05.html) for long trips and It have more usefull features I can remember. It's comfortable when it's fully loaded and have a suspension system really cool.

I looked at the north face packs and the couldn't find the solo journey online anywhere. The recon looks pretty descent, I am looking to spend anywhere from 50 - 100 dollars.

I think the recons retail for around $75. I believe I got mine on a end-of-summer sale for $60, IIRC.

I know this may sound foolish, but whatever you get, wear it out a bit. A dirty or "used" outside appearance draws less attention than brand new gear. Besides, I've found most packs are too stiff and need a little softening.
