Suggestions welcome on next knife purchase

I'm about to lay down some money for a new knife :D

It started with an EZ-Out, then a Vapor, then a Camillus EDC, and most recently a Magna w/ Al scales.

I'm ready lay down around $100 for my next knife, and naturally, I'm a bit apprehensive. I'm looking for a smaller EDC knife (I'm carrying the Magna now, the weight doesn't bother me, but it's a bit bulky). The blade has to be under 3.5 inches, and the handle would preferably be around 4.25 inches or so (larger handle fits my fairly large hands). I really don't mind what kind of lock it has, as long as it's well made. Easy (easier) to sharpen would be a plus too.

So far, I've looked at:

Mini-SOCOM (black coated blade)
Mini-AFCK II in M2
BM Osbornes
BM Griptilian

The Osbornes seem a bit small, although they do look nice. I ruled out the 705 because it's too small for my hands. The top candidate is the Mini-AFCK II in M2, because the dimensions seem about right. I'm tempted by the Mini-SOCOM, though, just because it's a MT.

I'm sure there are many more out there that I'm missing, so suggestions would be welcome.

My price range is somewhat limited, about up to 120.

Microtech SOCOM or AFCK. I have the larger sizes of both and if I were going mini, they'd be at the top of my list possibilities.

How abt BM940/1 Axis lock is good maybe a bit longer but still good only problem is the scratches on the handle of the Aluminium when u put the knife in your pocket with keys etc.

...but I recommend the Emerson Mini Commander. Small knife with big knife performance.

first of all the you can get a mini commander off of ebay... but then again i'm not too keen on the commanders cept for self defense...

the BM 94x series is great but they are a bit small if thats going to be a problem.

the afck is great mini or full size, you might look into the afck axis lock with d2

you can get a Al Mar SERE 2000, a Kershaw Boa, basically all of the BM axis locks, and quite a few of the MT are in your budget check out the for sale section on the forums Mike has a lot of good deals on the MTs.

Spyderco Calypso Jr., plain edge is a superb EDC My hands are huge and It's not too small for me.

I'd like to recommend the spyderco Massad Ayoob plain edge. I just got mine from the Brown truck of love yesterday and am totally enchanted with this knife. This is coming from a knife knut who basically prefers small fixed blades as my EDC. I got mine from Bayou LaFourche who has them on special right now. Can't beat the price for such a fantastic knife. I'm actually carrying it IWB and it's not bothering me! This is the ONLY knife I've ever said that about. I cannot say enough about this knife.

actually the 940 osborne is probably just larger than the 3.5 inches you stated. its a great knife, though one of the springs died on me (broke). that was fixed with little hassel though. axis lock is a very good design, and opens/closes easily

ive heard good things about the MT mini socom too. wouldnt mind getting one myself.

the name SKD sound familiar to you ?

Check out the Gerber Harsey Air Ranger (if you don't mind a liner-lock).

I also like the Benchmade Mini-Griptilian.

Good luck,
Allen.

SKD? Vaguely remember a guy at &TOTSE with that nick, not too many posts, though.

And I think I'll probably end up getting the mini-SOCOM. Probably because I've heard about the tight tolerances on MTs, and I want to see that first-hand...

But, of course, something may come up, and I may change my mind again :D

My 2 favorite folders are Benchmade of course, The 806D2 AFCK and the 710. It's hard to decide which one I like best. If you had them you would understand!

yea, thats me. nice to see you here :)

from what ive heard, the socom (or mini) is a very good knife. with knives, its generally you get what you pay for :)

the blade is just under 3.5" from handle. I think the 942/943 would be your best choice depending on what blade style you prefer. For me it's the 941/941 clip point instead of the 940/942 "reverse Tanto".

I am still amazed at how well this series of knives cuts. The blade was just made for cutting (unlike all those other knives, hehe).

I'm also a big guy and these knives feel real good in my hand, and in my pocket.
