Folks, I am looking hard at getting my first Randall.

And need help with a few questions please:

I will use it for General camp chores, including skinning , filleting fish, fuzz sticks, and the occasional batonning when necessary.

(1) Is there a Randall in the 4 inch blade range that would be best for this?

(2)Any typy of tang construction / handle material that lends itself more to potential hard use (thinking of the batonning) that I should go for - wondering if over time, the tang might have more potential to come loose in some of the various handle materials - is the only reason I ask.

(3) Is there a place I can go to get the stories behind the Randalls - to find out the models that others have used, and how they have held up over time?

Thanks a bunch!!

You can always check the Randall Knife Society website. There's a link to it in the collectors forums on this website. There is lots of information on all the different Randall models and you can post your question there too. If a 4 inch blade is what you are looking for either a model 8-4 bird & trout, model 26 pathfinder, model 5-4 camp knife, GTR special. The list can go on and on. You can also go to the Randall Knife website and check out the different descriptions they have for each model or even call the shop and ask for advice.

I concur with bladerunner on your choices but in this order.

#1 Model 5 Camp and Trail
#2 Model 8 Bird and Trout (high demand for this one along with price)

and my personal favorite

#3 Model 26 Pathfinder

My overall favorite Randall model is the #5, but if you want to baton with it, use a knife that was designed for such uses, such as a Busse.

If I were to baton with a Randall, I would want to use one with a full tang, meaning a #14, #15, #16, or Fireman Special. Of those, only the Fireman Special is available in the four-inch blade length that you stated. Here is a photo of one of mine (the photo was taken by the seller, not me):

It's a tough little knife. I have another with a Black Micarta handle with full finger grooves, but I prefer this one with a Single Finger Grip handle.

This knife is longer, but very rugged and with a single guard suitable for your needs. The Border Patrol handle would be good for your needs.

I can never figure out the difference between a single finger groove handle and a border patrol handle.

BP is more of a swale or palm-swell than a finger-groove. I've got a 15 with the BP handle. (It's not single-finger at all.)

Check em out on Ebay. Plenty offered there to find out what looks like what.
