Hey guys, i'm new to the whole Buck scene (and to these forums.) Gotta say, though, i'm loving it so far. My uncle had a Buck 119 from 1991 (has a cross next to 119 on the ricasso (i'm just using a term i found on the internet. i dunno.) and i looked up the symbol so i know the knife in question is a 1991) and he gave it to me as a belated 18th birthday present. It was still in its packaging, never opened, with the old registration form and the message from Buck Knives "welcoming you to the family" and whatnot.

I want to get further into Buck knives and I was wondering what models you guys recommend for me. I mainly want to collect but practicality and usefulness is a good thing too! I'd like to have a wall full of different knives to look at and actively add to!

Thanks in advance! :D

A bunch of 110's are a must!! That will keep you busy (and broke) for awhile. It's the flag ship, iconic Buck knife to me.

Hm, well thank God I can finally buy knives without an adult. I'm legally an adult myself now :D

How much do these suckers retail for? I know that ordering straight from Buck will run me a bit more money than ordering new from Amazon...

You can get the basic 110 with a nylon sheath at Walmart for right around $30. The various (and there are hundreds of them) versions with different scales, blade material and so one will have to be found at specialty dealers or online.

Then there are the old timers. The 110 alone can keep you busy for years collecting.

You've come to the right place.

Since you're started on the 100 series with the 119 and you like the 119......maybe you'd like to get one each of all the 100s of a certain time period.

One example would be a more recent time period like three liners (Buck, 1xx, U.S.A. ) with just the two micarta spacers. They're fairly common and not prohibitively expensive.

Choose whatever really appeals to you a lot and then have fun tracking down a good example of each model. Get them NIB if you want a truly blue chip collection or just get one each of some nice old knives.

It all works.......it's all fun.

That's the beauty of it!

:D

The next trip might be to ebay to find those special 2 Dot 110's or finger groove model, or maybe a 1972 Catagory 2 Version 3 112 Ranger.

Then before you know it you have bids on a 181 ATS-34 Odyssey

And when it's all said and done you got a stack of em. Enjoy

i bow to you, good sir. that's one mighty sexy collection you have there. =]
i own two fold knives but not from Buck. i own the TW203 TIMBERWOLF spring-assist knife (the nickname came BEFORE the knife. that's why i bought it.) and some a American Wildlife pocket knife i'm giving to my lady friend who needs it.

but Bucks are truly a masterpiece to behold, n'est-ce pas? :)

Would amazon be a good place to look? Also, I'm friends with the local Army/Navy store and they give me a 10% "employee" discount even though I don't even work there lol so i'm gonna look there.

I'm talking older knives, so you can find them for sale on this forum (I'd buy from the forum members who have been around a few years and sold some knives with happy customers) or go to e-Bay or other internet sellers.

You can learn a lot about knives just from putting in your hours on e-Bay and carefully reading descriptions and looking at pictures. You'll also see the members here posting pictures of their purchases from various sources and you can learn a lot from using the search function to find threads on knives you're interested in.

Amazon has new knives mostly and I haven't shopped there much for knives.

TW, welcome to the Buck Forum... Well, I like 110s, 112s, Bucklites, all 100s, 300s, 500s, 700s and anything with a stag handle and any other Buck knife I can find... Looks like I like them all... :D  :D

But I always tell everyone to collect what they like and not what other like...

Good luck, ITE

I've been advised by several collectors that I should focus on one style of knife. The best I've been able to do is to focus on the entire Buck line.:o

Timb3, Welcome . Amazon is good for new knives but Buck also periodically runs specials on their website and you can at times pick up some good deals that way . Right now just buy what you enjoy and later decide what to collect . Your 119 has a blade of 425M steel which was the last full year (1991)they used that steel . The next year 420HC steel was phased in to their mfg. . Your knife was made in Buck's El Cajon, CA. plant . Buck moved in 2004 to Post Falls, ID.. Just some history for you on your knife . DM

Welcome to the Buck forum TIM.This is the 103 Skinner.I have to agree with the 110 as far as a great knife to start a collection.Buck makes so many fine knives,I've been unable to focus my small collection to one catagory.Too many options.

Ah, nice. Thanks for the welcome! You can just call me Wolf. most of my friends do either way. That's some quality information, David. Unfortunately my laptop died and I'm using my Asus's built-in "ExpressGate" which gives me web browsing functions so if I cannot post frequently, don't worry; i'm not dead LOL.

Welcome Timb3r,

I believe the 110 is the best choice. There are so many different types(gold etched, yellow horse, customs, advertising, etc) that you can pick what you want to focus your collection on. They also can often be picked up "cheap" compared to others if you watch the auction sites and are patient. The 500 series also affords alot of collecting possibilities(right Haebbie and Plum:D).

Fritz
