Hello,

I have been studying Kuntao-Silat deThouars 3 times a week for a little over 2 years now (beginer)

From my experience, Silat tends to be comprehensive and all inclusive. From empty hands to multiple weapons. From defending against one attacker to many attackers. From grappling to high kicks....

The famous Silat styles from the island of Sumatra are: Menangkabau, Harimau, Kumango, Sawi, Lintau and many others (From Don Draeger's Book.)

Anybody with any interest in IMA, should get Don Draeger's book "The Weapons and Fighting Arts of Indonesia." It is available thru Amazon. This book explains the history and the developement of MA in the Islands. Hope this helps.

thank you for you reply.ill have to buy that book.i have a video silat/kuntao secerts of with steve gartin.it kicks.that why i have been posting here for several days.there are no schools where i live,so i hafe to wing it.the style the guy was talking to me about does not sound like the silat i have seen trained in.in his style you dont even start out learning the knife!i have always been informed without the knife there is no silat.so forgive a learner if i get some things confused.

Bladefighter,

Mr Gartin is a long time student of Kuntao Silat deThouars taught by Sigung Willem deThouars. Sigung Willem deThouars started teaching in the Denver area during the sixties and he still teaches here today. Mr Gartin certainly knows his stuff....

Silat, like most arts, starts with training some basic muscle memory into your body. The focus is on correct body movement. Knife applications come later...I would give this guy a chance...
