OK, lets see if I can sum up some of the weekend happenings for you guys.

I got off the plane Friday morning (after only 2 1/2 hours sleep)
and met Chuck face to face for the first time. We took care of the rent-a-car and hotel crap, and were off to lunch and Benchmade.

Benchmade was a great experience! We were taken upstairs (a work in progress) at which time an announcement was made. "Anyone wanting to see the Balisong Demo, come upstairs". I expected 6 people or so............. the place was packed in 5 minutes. What a rush! All the people that play an integral part in designing, and assembling our favorite toys came up to see Chuck and I. We were celebrities, no kidding. We each stood up in front and did what we do (manipulation and comedy), and they loved it. I guess it's not often they get to see what actually happens to their products when they get into the public's hands.

Next was a little Q&A session with the employees. It was great to help them understand what it is we like in a Balisong and why. (I don't know why, but I just assumed they were all Balisong
masters............ Duh!). Some great Ideas were thrown around, so don't be surprised if you see some awesome additions to the
line-up in the future.

Oh, and did I mention they presented me with not one, but two, mint Model 45s??? You can see pics on my other post. Theres also a Model 42 on the way to me as we speak (#69). (Thank-you Travis, Vance, and everyone else!!!!!!!!!). The catch is, I have to beat the crap out of it and report my findings. NO PROBLEM!

Touring the facility was next. You'd never believe what goes into putting all those different model knives together. I don't want to say too much about what I saw, as some of it was very industry sensitive. Suffice it to say I was floored by the CAD modeling and the laser cutters. These guys are on the cutting edge of technology.

After BM was a trip to Northwest Knives and Collectables. This place was phenomenal. Visit their site for more:

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Friday night was spent entertaining the waitress' at the local OutBack steak house.......... suffice it to say, they won't soon forget us!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Now to the show.......... Ah, the show. What can you say about 420+ tables FULL of some of the most incredible stuff you'll ever
see. Imagine everything (knife related) you could ever want under one roof. That was the show.

Customs, art pieces, swords, sheaths, Balis, scale materials, damascus, vintage pocket knives, straight razors, you name it and
it was there.

I got to see some of the Greats of the custom world. Though I didn't talk to any because I'm not really into the technical side of knives, just a user and abuser. I did talk a bit with Bernard Levine though. He's a great guy, and has probably forgotten more about knives than any of us will ever know in our lifetimes. The man is astounding!

Prices on a lot of the custon knives were WAY up there...... beautiful though they were...... Yeow, those prices were frightening.

Our Demo went well. There were quite a few people in the room I'm happy to say (some BM employees wanted an encore performance).
Chuck and I agreed beforehand that our focus should be on educating the knife public and making them aware of the Balisong, Not just showing off our stuff. I was surprised at how many people were totaly unaware of the Balisong. I think we succeded in changing that.

Kelly Worden followed us with a Demo that justifies his reputation as "The Man" when it comes to knife fighting and defense. Chuck and I both had a chance to talk with him and both came away in awe. I'd tell you more about him......... but then
I'd have to kill ya' (LOL)

The rest of the day saw Chuck and I entertaining people from a table we were trying to relax at (and walking around a little more). Bob Mikus (very nice guy) was hanging with us, and we had quite a comedy act going for awhile there. We even gave some lessons to a few kids (they caught on quick!) and expressed or views on the Balisong to anyone and everyone that would listen.

I flew out on Sunday morning, so I couldn't join Chuck for Sunday's Demo. He'll have to fill you guys in on that part.

Hey Clay! You're right - it was a lot of fun! Especially when those kids' dad showed up looking so serious

Loved it when he ended up buying them all balis!

For my fellow forumites that haven't already guessed - Clay and Chuck are not just internet personalities....they're as fun in person as they are in your machine!

The show closes at 3pm on Sunday afternoon, so Sunday's demo at 1:30 was less attended, perhaps only 150 people. Saturday was just incredible. That room was packed!

Sunday, I followed the rope cutting contest. They hang a bundle of heavy (about 1 1/2 thick) hemp ropes, serious rope here people) taped together about every foot from a horizontal bar over head. Your job: slice through the entire free-hanging bundle within one foot of the end with one slash of your knife. The winner cut eight ropes (a bundle as thick as the average man's leg) in on slash!

Then, they put empty aluminum pop cans in a stand. Your job: slash the pop can in half leaving the bottom half on the stand. Amazing.

Then, it's back to that horizontal bar, but this time they hand a thin string with a clothspin on the end and clip a piece of cigarette paper (very fine paper) from that. Your job: with one clean slash, cut the paper in half. This is the same knife you just cut pop cans and bundles of rope with. You do not get to sharpen or adjust it. Incredible.

Anyway, the show went very nicely. I bought several nice balisongs including an NIB BM 69 for $150, and a mint 68 for $125. A few others too that I'm not going to tell you about. I got myself a nice gentleman's folder with MOP scales which I'm not going to show you either. Clay and Bob saw it. The rest of you yahoos will just have to come next year to really see The Balisong Collector in action.

I live in california, and would have no problem driving up there, to meet you guys. But would you guys care about hanging out with a 17 year old teen? Im sad I didnt get to show up this year, had to stay in school you know... just happened to be right before our mid finals.

Hey SiliconJester - I can't answer for Chuck or Clay, but its not your age that makes you someone to 'hang' with or not. It's mutual interests and how they're expressed. Obviously you're on the right track....you like balis!!!
biggrin.gif
It'll be another year until the next Eugene show. We'll all post around then and if folks can meet by all means - lets! If you're worried about us not wanting you around or you not wanting us "old farts" around (as my daddy said - Easy on the "old") - grab a buddy and haul him/her up here! It's cheaper if you split the cost, and you can wander off on your own if you want.

On the whole I'd have to say you'd be most welcome! (and save your pennies! there is TONS of stuff there you'll WANT)

Clay, Kelly Worden is truly a master--some kind of weird genius in the discipline of smoking opponents without apparent effort (and then showing you how to do it). I consider myself incredibly fortunate to be one of his students.

Datu said he was going to the show; he was pretty excited about it. He has a lot of new knife designs and is hooking up with various makers.

SiliconJester,

The Shot Show is in 'Vegas every year. That's even closer. I hate 'Vegas and have never gone voluntarily, but each year I think that maybe I ought to for the Shot Show. Maybe the coming year.

Frank,

You should have come down with Datu and met some of us. It was a fun show.

Clay & Gollnick - My wife and I caught your demonstration on Saturday. You both did a great job of presenting the Balisong in a very positive light and educating the public about it versatility and use. Good job.

My wife and I were there at the show on Saturday. You guys did a great job! Very informative. Gollnick, not bad with that large bali-song. Don't think I've seen one that big before. I've got one of those extra large Taylor Golden Dragons with the sharpened false edge. It's a handful and fairly tricky to get it moving fast. Hey, thanks Gollnick for checking out my two bali's, the BM 41 and the C.I. 1200. I may be interested in selling them to support my other addicting hobby, MT's. Anyways, you guys were great.

Thank you all for your many kind comments. Clay and I enjoyed doing it. It was fun to meet a few forumites too.

That sounded like fun! I know so many cool knife people who were all there at the same time, from all over the place and where was I? Working on knives. Oh well, someday it will pay off. Sounds like you guys made out on some knives too... Hermit

Hey micro, I would happily support your MT addiction. Sell those babies to me. If you are thinking bout it, email me orbital@utm.net

Oh man I tell you.......... doing that Demo was a total blast! I had such a great time.

Not too bad considering there was little or NO preparation.

.......... and now the Balisong show heads to Atlanta. I hope it goes over as well (or better) there.

Oh and Hermit........... I almost jumped on some FINE looking quilted maple to use for handle scales for the Sifu and the Balisong. That would have made for a nice matching set.

Clay. You keep swearing at me with that "sifu" word!! I have several maples, curly, fiddleback and birdseye and have used them all on knives. Very nice look but won't be "hard" enough for the sifu unless it's stabilized. How bout a nice coat of krylon spray paint!! Easier than making sifu scales! Am I the only idiot that ever rescaled one of these or had one apart?? Very precise mechanism with all parts of the knive working together for integrity. Sameo with the folding hobbit I have here for rework. Hermit
