It's been a long time since I haven't posted, I got my little peanut in red bone, with some uneven dye but I still love it. I went outside and took some pictures because my garden is starting to look great! post your own pic below to see what yours look like at this time of the year.

That's a great looking "monster" there.

As far as the bugs, my wife calls them "hard back bugs", but I think they are Japanese beetles. Here in north Louisiana they are nigh unto a plague after dark. Your windshield will be a nasty mess in just a few miles. And they come to any light left on after dark by the dozens. I try to get all my litter box duty done before dark. One thing that I like about them is that when they first show up you can start looking for bedding red ears. My favorite pan fish.

Anyway, nice pictures.

they might be japanese beetles but dont exactly look right. are they shiny green on the 'head'? they sort of look like what i hear people call 'porch light bugs'; a kind of a brown or black beetle that comes out at night and is drawn to your porch light. not very scientific lol.
japanese beetles come during the hot weather and have not emerged where i live. if you are just now getting tulips then i speculate that they are probably not japanese beetles.
what we usually do for pests like beetles is pick them off our plants and throw them into a bucket of soapy water. the soap either holds them in the water or maybe penetrates their shell or something so they cant get out and they drown. note that if you have a bunch of them in the bucket they can sometimes 'raft' on the corpses of their dead brethren long enough to fly away. its a little time consuming but its an easy 'drink beer, smoke cigars and listen to the radio' type of job.

Google "June Bugs", that's what we always called them when I was a kid. I remember playing under the streetlight and picking them up and chasing my older sister with them ... heheh

Third year for our purple iris to be planted but the first year they bloomed. Sorry no knife in the pic, taken for my sister.

I finally tried some nature-knife photography. I've got a ways to go, but here is an old Imperial cattle knife growing with some daisies:

its often the third year that a garden plant comes into its own. they say 'the first year it sleeps, second year it creeps, third year it leaps'.

edit to add:
nice irises, by the way!

I like iris. Louisiana iris is very prolific and you can expect "volunteers" from any spot that had them before, for a least 3 years after you thought you had dug them all out. They are pretty as well. I've got two or three volunteers among our shrubs, but they haven't bloomed yet. As far as green beetles and June bugs are concerned, here in our area June bugs are iridescent green colored and abound in late June/early July. Is this the same beetle that you are calling Japanese beetles?

Porch light bugs, yep, they are that for sure. Obnoxious creatures, they are. June bug, Japanese beetle, porch light bug, whatever they are.

Your "monster" looks quite pleased with himself and satisfied with life in general. Good for both of you.

lol im such a nerd. looked into this whole bug business.

what i am calling 'porch light bugs' are dark brown to black beetles and only fly at night. they lay low during the day and look like this:

june bugs are much bigger, fly during the day and look like this:
junebug_zpsc01eb1f3.jpg

sometimes you can see kind of a lot of them but they are not usually a terrible, destructive infestation.

japanese beetles are smaller than junebugs and look like this:
japanesebeetle_zps06ce8634.jpg

these generally come in great numbers and will be a terrible destructive infestation. they will eat all sorts of things (around here they seem to really like roses), mate like crazy and then lay their eggs in the ground for next year.

I had a problem with something eating my basil and habanero leaves. I tried some sea weed extract I got from the local nursery. Just mix about 2 ounces to 2 gallons and spray on the leaves. It worked well. Nice thing is if it does not work for the critters wreaking havoc on you, it can't hurt anything and isn't poisonous to animals or humans.

The boy relaxing under the tree. Ruff life watching the house.

Those "June bugs" have a very short season/life cycle, and I don't think the adults have the ability to eat.
The grubs, on the other hand, live underground and eat plant roots.

Nice looking "monster" I have a few yard ravaging monsters myself. I have always called those bugs "June Bugs" as several others have already mentioned.
