Summer Knife Reccomendation

Hey guys, well it's getting pretty warm down here in Atlanta and I need a recommendation for a good summer knife.

I'll be spending a bit of time down in the Keys this summer and I'm looking for something that won't weigh down my shorts (patagonia baggies - wow!).

Ideally it would be smaller 2.5-3 inches long (but I have big hands). Thin and light. It should be a folder. It needs to lock. The lock needs to be simple enough for me to clean the sand out. It needs to be able to handle occasional dunks in salt water. I'd like to be able to disassemble it easily for cleaning. Bonus would be yellow or orange handles.

I know about the BM grips, I have a few BM knives. I am worried about getting sand in the AXIS lock and not being able to clean it out. Not too familiar with Spyderco, but I imagine they sell something suitable.

Never handled a sebenza, but I imagine they would be perfect, I don't really wanna spend that on something I may leave on the bottom of the Gulf :).

Anyway, thoughts? Am I asking too much? Thanks guys!

I'd opt for a salt-1. Same size as the Delica, sounds like you wrote the description of its purpose in your post:)

Cool! I didn't see the Salt 1 only the Atlantic and Pacific Salts (those seemed big).

Looks good, is it pinned together?

Fallkniven U2, 2.5" Blade, SGPS Stainless Steel, Zytel Handle, 1.5 oz. Very conservative look (sheeple friendly). Only thing is, not available in bright colors.

I would suggest a Mission MPF 3 with either plain or partially serrated edge, it is a frame lock and it open frame so maintance is a breeze and the entire knife can be dissambled in about a minute with a number nine torx head. The knife is solid titanium with a beta ti blade, it will not rust. You can get it salty and sandy and its fine don't even wash it off. Plus it wont rust from sweat. The knives used to list for $415.00 but now they are on sale at www.missionknives.com for $275.00 but if you become a member of the site which is free and takes about 30 seconds to do they will knock off another 10% so you can get one for $250.00. This knife is not pinned together and has a solid titanium handle on both sides, so it is sturdier than the salt series. The knife is light and very stout as it is solid titanium everything including the screws, pivot barrel, and clip. Just a suggestion.

Good luck.

I like the Fallkniven U2, but it's not what I'm looking for (that's a question for another time - gent's knives). The Spydie Salt 1 is pretty close to what I want. I was kind of joking about the sebbie :) I can't really afford a $250 knife :) and I can't access the mission site.

The Salt is nice, anyone know of anything similar to the Salt 1?

Based on your description, you need a frame lock, open body/barrel spacer with screws, G10 or other synthetic scales, and stainless steel blade.

Sounds like BM to me, you just need to find one that's not AXIS lock.

The boker subcom is small and easy to clean but if you have big hands then it might be too small.

Spyderco salt is the way to go. The pins and pocket clip are all also rust proof. The yellow handles look sweet (I've only got black). I brought my Pacific Salt PE to Kauai with me on vacation around Christmas time, it lived IWB of my boardshorts (one pair was even patagonia:D) or else in my pocket in the rare occasion I was wearing real pants/shorts. The knife is nice and light (no liners). I snorkeled, body surfed, swam, hiked, you name it with the knife on me the whole time. The clip kept it safe IWB of my board shorts and the knife handled the constant salt water/lack of maintenance (I didn't so much as wipe it off when I got out) like a champion.

For your purposes I think you want the yellow Salt I, PE or SE is up to you. If you're gonna be cutting alot of line the SE might be nice, but I prefer PE for most uses. It is pinned, but I doubt you will ever need to disassemble it to clean it out.

The pacific salt seemed a little big to me as well when I first got it too. I think it's because I usually carry sub 3" blades as mandated by the Detroit ordinance. However I began to like having a larger blade, and if you're allowed to carry that size blade I would also advise looking into the Pacific salt.

David Boye cobalt folder is another salt water knife. You can order them straight from him. Salt would be another one if you dont like the Boye. GOOD LUCK! Kevin :D

yes, pinned together. i have the atlantic salt. to me it is small, but i normally prefer larger folders.

lots of variations to choose from, and none will break the bank.

i would recommend against the mission folder. i owned one very briefly, and couldn't wait to get rid of it. the design may have changed, but on mine the pivot screw held the clip in place. tighten it so the clip doesn't wobble, and you can't open the knife, and vice versa. i hated the thumbstud, and the knife was much smaller than i expected (which you may actually prefer).

i also think you will get a far better edge and edge retention with h1 steel vs. titanium.

The Salt 1 looks pretty good, I like the David Boye folder, but I probably wouldn't see use of the marlinspike more than a few times.

The Boye knife reminded me of Myerchin http://www.myerchin.com/ anybody heard good or bad things about them?

Thanks for the advice!
