Hello fellow knife lovers, I’ve been a member of this forum for quite some time but never showed my work here. Maybe the time is ripe now.
Since about three years under the artist name of aliaswonder (also my alias name on a few forums) I essentially work with bamboo root and bamboo stem to create higo no kami inspired friction folder. I draw my inspiration from Nature to give to the bamboo an aged and worn out appearance through means of sculpture and patina. I call my little things “Take no Kami”, meaning “lord of the bamboo” as an homage to the classic higonokami which by the way I collect passionately.
I don’t do the blades myself but instead do collaborations with renowned makers from Europe and Japan who agree to create blades according to my designs.
Here is a small series of folders I did this summer.
A friend, Achilles from the French forum NCZ initiated this special project. He, himself is an avid collector of Sardinian Pattada folders and when he proposed me to make a collab with two Italian masters of the genre, Gigi Stechi and Davide Steri, I of course said immediately yes.
I always thought that Pattada blades have an elegant bamboo leaf shape and that it will go well with a bamboo handle, so I jumped on the boat with enthusiasm.
I made a slight redesign of the traditional shape, adding a lever to it and about a week later started to receive these beautiful damascus blades. Our Sardinian friends are not only talented they are also passionate, ready to engage in any adventure if it is creative enough.
Upon getting the blades and seeing their great quality I decided to make something special and embarked in the challenge of making all 9 knives with entirely sculpted handles.
So here is the result : Japanese inspired folders with Italian blades and Chinese bamboo handles sculpted by a French maker ! A true international joint venture, east meets west, Marco Polo style !
But lets stop the talking, pictures are worth a thousand words...

This first knife is what I call a « seal » knife, its engraved butt can be used like an oriental calligraphic seal with a custom abstract glyph that is unique to the knife.
Damascus blade by Gigi Stechi.

Another seal knife but this one made out of black bamboo root. Black bamboo root is naturally black outside and of a lighter color inside, enabling me to play with the two tones like on a cameo.

For this one I decided 2 weeks ago to add a sheath made of the base of a bamboo stem. The knife just smoothly slides into it and is held in place by friction. It is sturgy enough to be carried around like this.

Another seal knife but this one with a small ebony cap at the end. I left it blank so that its future owner can have it engraved with his personal design.

Flamed damascus by Gigi !

This one with a sanmai custom blade by Davide Steri.

Another seal knife made of black bamboo root with a blank ebony cap.

This one has a small seal attached and a sanmai blade by Davide Steri.

And the last, with a beautiful (imho) suminagashi sanmai blade by Davide SterI

Here is a small photographic step by step WIP of n°124 to show the process.
There is an average of one week of work on each knife.

Thank you for your interest.

one of the coolest things I've seen for awhile. Wonderful stuff.

Definitely one of the wildest things I've seen in a while. Organic, sinewy; beautiful works so intricately carved but look like they've grown that way. That one with the slip sheath is phenomenal.

I am stunned! You have made such beautiful objects out of a most common material. Just lovely knives!!! Do you sculpt with other materials as well?

:) Actually I only got seriously into sculpture this year and only on bamboo and knife handles. I didn't know I could do it and would like it so much before. It is a very addictive activity and I have plenty of room to improve. I've been to China and I saw that they carve amazing things out of bamboo root.
But you got it right, I like the fact of taking a humble material and make it look precious.
Thanks.

One of the most incredibly artistic knives I have ever seen. Yes, it's very skeletal and sinewy. It appears like anatomy.

Almost a little creepy. But that's good. Make the viewer a little uncomfortable. ;)

Your photography and video skills are just as keen.

Major accolades!

In the internet world we have a saying for this. you have mad skills, dude.

I am not a huge art knife person, but I could see myself using those unlike so many other knives custom knives I see. They are works of art that require more than just an understanding of what things work together to be able to envision. I love it and I can't wait to see more.

:) Thank you for the comments.
I think I am searching for a balance between the artistic side and the usability. These ones are pretty elaborate but I am very careful about the ergonomics. I think it is the key to have a safe friction folder. Bamboo almost naturally fits the hand if the nods are well placed. I give a special attention to the finger choil so that at the end you hold as much the blade (from both top and bottom) as the handle and so the lack of a blocking system is really not an hindrance.
Next to carved pieces like this I do other simpler more edc spirited folders as well. I will post some soon.

That is stunning, truly beautiful, it does look anatomical. that's really incredible work. I love the blade designs too, they're perfect compliment to those handles. The one with the slip sheath is my favorite too.
