Had some nice sunshine here in the Pacific Northwest.
Figured I'd get out and enjoy it!
Grabbed up my BK9 and Bill Siegle Hardcore, a 2x4, some clamps, and took to the back yard for some chopping action.
Let me state here that my intention wasn't to see which knife is a better chopper.
I know from experience that they are both very capable blades.
The Siegle has a convexed edge with micro bevel. It's 7"" long and 1/4" thick. 5160 differentially heat treated. It's a bad boy!
The BK9 has a 40 degree inclusive edge. 9" long and .188" thick. 1095 CroVan. The King!
First up: Siegle Hardcore
My hand was pretty close to the edge of the picnic table that I clamped the 2x4 to, so I wasn't chopping full force.
The Siegle ate threw it in 27 chops. All clean bites and the knife strikes with force. Very impressive.
I went another round with the Siegle. 24 chops. All nice and clean chips flying.
I can see why Bill aptly named it the Hardcore. This knife just begs to be used and abused!
Lucy, my German Shepard, wanted in on the action.
She was running off with any big chips that strayed away from the table.
Next up: BK9
After 4 deep bites, the King knocked off the remaining piece of 2x4. WOW!
Maybe just a weak piece in the wood. Maybe influenced by that small knot you see there.
I reclamped the 2x4 and started again.
This time I got 14 chops in before it knocked off the remaining chunk.
Not weak wood. No knots present on the second go around.
While both blades performed more than admirably, today was the Kings day to reign.
