Like many forumites I have a survival kit that includes a knife along with much of the usual survival “stuff”. Having said that and since I am more of a fixed blade addict, I recently asked myself “what would I want if I could have a small fixed blade knife and sheath that incorporated the bare field essentials?” I decided to use the KISS principle and limited myself to the knife, a sharpener and something to start a fire with. Here’s what I ended up with in a couple hours of playing around.

The sheath is made from Kydex with a piece of 3-4 oz. Leather stretched over and riveted to the lower 2/3’s of the sheath creating a pocket. Into the pocket I am able to slip a small, flat diamond sharpening plate (the kind you find in the fishing section). I thought I’d slip Swedish Fire Steel into the front pocket. Unfortunately, I only have a large one and it is too big for the pocket. I will either order a small one from Bagheera or maybe purchase a small spark-lite or a plain ferrocerium stick.

Anyway, here’s what it looks like. It is not fancy but it meets my goals. It is small enough to fit in a jacket pocket or will ride on my belt.

Next go around I’ll try and make the “pockets from Kydex as well. Also, now that I’m thinking about it I might try and mount a small compass in the butt of a knife that I’ll put together from one of the un-handled blades I’ve purchased over the years.

Looks great! I gotta ask though(somebody will eventually, might as well be me), what kinda knife is that? Let's see a pic of that bad boy!:)

The blade is carbon steel by Lauri of Finland. I made the handle from alternating pieces of cherry and walnut with black spacers. I put a brass spacer between the blade and handle.

Blade Length: 3.50” OAL: 7.125”

It is one of my early attempts to handle a blade. It’s not fancy but the blade takes and holds a great edge. I’ve field dressed several deer with it.

It is still one of my favorites and rides easily in a jacket pocket or on the belt. It’s the one I usually grab for my walks in the woods.
