We are still exploring the new area, and checking out things here. We used to go to the river walk on the Tennessee River back in Chattanooga. I learned about a river walk here, so today the little one and I went to go hang out together, have coffee / hot cocoa, and then go for a walk along the Grand River in Ionia. We wanted to explore the area, see how big it is, and see what all we could find that was new or different.

Her eyes lit up with the cocoa and a big chocolate cookie at Biggby, before the walk.

The autumn colors reflected in the water looked nice.

Yeah, with all the energy she has, the bench went un sat upon.

We spotted a familiar favorite pretty quick, the area is loaded with wild grapes.

Then she spotted something neither of us has seen before, so something new to identify. I am teaching her to not touch so many things with her bare hands. Since her knife is boxed up to send back to John for a real SKW edge now, I let her borrow one of mine for today's hike.

The cutlery for the day, a Fiddleback Recluse and Hiking Buddy.

Of course, since it may as well be the Tennessee state flower, we were very familiar with the poison ivy berries.

As always, no pool of water left undisturbed...

Some very old trees along the walk.

A good bit of fungi along the way, it threw her that there was a mushroom growing out of a knot hole on a tree, about fifteen feet off the ground.

Apparently these get pretty big.

Lots of these Asian beetles around

And a good bit of horse nettle around too

She saw a depth marker that she didn't notice on the way in. She was excited to see that it won't be long till she is five feet tall

Then back home she was tired, so she sat under a tree in the back yard reading her “science book”, a VERY old encyclopedia she is fascinated with, that her paw paw gave her while she waited on supper to get done. All 'n all, it was a great day.

Very cool Brian! It's good to see your young one still enjoying the outdoors as she grows up! That last picture looks like eye on the tree overlooking your daughter :D

ROCK6

Thanks Dave! Yeah, I figure I got a few more years before the boys really catch her attention. At this age none of them have cars or money so they can't take her out for treats, explorations, and dinners. So, for now daddy rules :D Ha, I hadn't even caught that eye on the maple tree, that's pretty cool, she hangs out under that tree a lot.

Love it Mist. Looks like you two had a great day. Thanks for sharing it with us.

Thanks, yeah I've always liked exploring new areas and new woods. We're having fun exploring these together.

Thanks man, yep the Recluse has gotten a lot of use lately, so it's developing a nice patina I think.

I don't know man, not so much to me. I have always seen and felt the forests as being alive. I see it like Rock does, like a watchful eye looking over her. She has been sitting under that tree a lot ever since we first moved up here.

awesome pics, brian! i like that last pic the best - a kid not in front of a tv and actually reading a book.

What a great time out with your daughter! The photos are really great.

Man, That young one is growing fast. Great pictures and a cool day out .
Thanks Mist.

Thanks Jay. Yeah, her mother, sister, and I all like to read so she picks up on that too. Screw a bunch of hollywood crap, give me the woods and a good book any day :)

What a great time out with your daughter! The photos are really great.

Thank you sir, glad you enjoyed them. It is always a great time out with her, she always amazes me and makes me laugh.

Yes she is. Won't be long and I'll be getting phone calls from college from her like I do from her sister, and I'll be back to hiking alone most of the time again. Glad you liked the post Hawkeye.

it is a friendly tree,it even made a bed of leaves for the little one

My thinking exactly :)

Always nice to read your threads Mist. Great pics.

I've been thinking about introducing knives to my daughter. She's in kindergarten, but she has an old soul. Any tips? What age was your daughter when you let her handle a knife?

In case you're interested, the mushrooms coming out of the knot hole are Elm Oysters;(I find most of them on Box Elder) a bit past prime, but they are tasty when gathered fresh.
The spotted one is Dryads Saddle, also known as Pheasant Back. Tasty when young, tough when old. The interesting thing is that they smell of melon.

Wonderful! Beautiful fall colors and those knives are fantastic. Looks like you guys had a great day together.

Thanks man, glad you enjoy them. I started Alayna out helping me in the kitchen a bit around age four using a semi dull paring knife, helping me with things like cutting polska kielbasa for kraut and sausage, fresh mushrooms, just to get an idea of the basics. Then later she did the carrots, potatoes, and celery, and minced onions for me. By the time she was five a close friend of mine gave her a knife he had made of D2 with a brass hilt and desert ironwood scales. It's boxed up now for the post, John didn't actually sharpen it all the way, and said when she was ready to send it back and he would put a real SKW edge on it. I think she is ready, so for now I am letting her borrow mine when we are out.

Thanks man, always interested in hearing more on plant and fungi lore from those more knowledgeable than I am.

Awesome. Can't wait to take my daughter out like this. Just turned 4 so we will have to wait.

Thanks, that's about the age I started taking her on short hikes on easy to manage trails and worked up from there.

Thanks Plue, nice scenery here for sure, and I love my Fiddlebacks. Yep a great day out, but usually is when I have her along, she always makes me laugh.

Hey mistwalker,

Looks like it might be Bladdernut (Stapylea trifolia). According to USDA, it grows in your area.
