Today saw ThePointyEnd heading down to my place for our bi-monthly knife shenanigans. Today, we did it right. Started off with a breakfast fit for a king. Steak, eggs, hashbrowns, and migas. (The migas consisted of chorizo, cured ham ends, fried torilla strips, tomatoes, mushrooms, onions, stop light peppers, fresh spinach, eggs, and Himalayan pink salt.) We each had a birch beer to go along with the meal, and some Tabasco and salsa verde (not shown) to round it off.
As we were recovering from breakfast, we got a few shots of some of the bigger knives we were planning on playing with today. From the left to right, Becker BK4, Becker BK9, Kershaw Camp 10, Ka-Bar Big Brother.
Pointy's Becker Bag, as if you couldn't tell.
Darth Maul style BK16's!
Then we just stuffed every knife we could grab into Pointy's bag. He aptly named it the "Knife Quiver".
Got outside, and managed to get this dead oak situated where we could actually get some chopping done on it.
From left to right, bottom to the top, we have Ka-Bar Big Brother, Becker BK4, Becker BK9, Kershaw Camp 10, rehandled Collins WW2 machete, custom BK handled knife I had made (Sheila), Becker BK2, Becker BK5, Becker BK16 FFG.
We fooled around awhile doing some chopping and comparison between the various knives. Despite having a somewhat similar shape, the BK4 and the Camp 10 did not stack up well to eachother. The BK4 has a much shorter grind height, and no where near as much blade width.
The closest performers were the BK9 and the Camp 10.
Despite having a similar shape and function, the BK9 and the Ka-Bar Big Brother are not very comparable either. The BK9 has much more weight than the Big Brother, and the sweet spot is located further up the blade on the Big Brother.
Pointy brought up the idea of the 1-inch punch, and we modified that into the 6 inch chop to see how these three stacked up against eachother. Very interesting results.
BK9 bites deep when swung from only six inches above.
Both the Camp 10 and the BK9 performed very similarly with a straightforward chop to this 1.25" stick. Not trying to power through it, but a good solid blow. If you rotate the stick you could see that both cuts were almost identical in depth.
Pointy makes ze fuzzsticks...
...Then lights 'em up!
