It was setting off bells in my head and then I remembered shooting this small but interesting W. Scagel knife for Jim Lucie's book some years back:

There is no history or info about it - Jim didn't know and I couldn't find much. However, my first thought on seeing Steve Johnson's above, as well as the Scagel, was "patch knife" as was used with the old percussion, powder and ball long guns a.k.a. muzzle loaders. It would also be perfect for shaving tinder with which to ignite kindling. If form follows function, this would make sense. But... I'm guessing, of course.
 
That Emmanuel/Loerchner collaboration is very interesting!
