Here's a piece that I'm really excited about (not that I'm ever *not* excited about a new knife :). Most of my collection tends towards more eastern influenced pieces, but I've really been enjoying Don Hanson's recent work. The quality in his knives is obvious, and he always seems to have some of the best ivory for handles. I wanted to see what he'd come up with if I turned him loose on something a little less conservative than he usually does on the bowie side of things. This is the first s-guard he's done and it's just amazing to look at.

Don was a real pleasure to work with - sending me some different drawings, and coming up with a design that I really love. One of the coolest things he did was to send pics of the blade itself overlayed by the handle drawing so I could see how a particular blade would look with the handle.

Anyway - here's what Don says about the knife:

"The guard and spacers are wrought iron with three copper spacers. The blade is 580 layers of W2, 15N20 and 1080 with a whole lot of shimmer when moved in the light, I did capture a little of it in the photos."

It's a 9 1/2" blade, 15" overall, fossil walrus handle w/copper pin.

I really love how the shape of the blade works with the radical s-guard. And the textured copper spacer is a great accent. It's always a great feeling when the knife you ordered is your favorite knife from that maker, and that's the case here.

Thanks Don!

That's a wonderful knife you got there. Don Hanson is one of my two favorite bladesmiths, the other is Dan Winkler. You done really good buying a knife from Don:thumbup:

I can understand your excitement and pride. Love those warm materials. Not your 'typical' Don Hanson fixed blade, but it IS typical Don Hanson quality and especially Don's sense of flow.

I'm glad for the both of ya'!

Don, you rascal! Your images will exceed mine in about, ohhh---a week or so, at this rate! (If not already!!! :grumpy: ;) Now, unless these are Jeremy's.... ???? )

Thanks!

Coop

I'm always a fan of Don's work...but this one is definitely another one of my favorites:thumbup:  Time to start another savings fund;) The S guard shape and subtle flow appeals to me more than any other style I've seen in a long long time!

nope - Don's pics :)

i take horrible ones. one of these day's i'll have to read up on how to do better.

Gaussian,
Great score.WOW.
What a beautiful S-guard,for sure it's flow with Don.
Congrats,Doug :)

Glad you like it Jeremy and thanks to all for your kind comments. This is a special piece and I like the way it came together. The design ideas came from Jeremy and he pushed me in a little different direction and I like it, thanks man. The S-guard was a pain but after scrapping the first one, the second one came out alright. I'm also really liking wrought iron and high layer random damascus, very organic with good flow and movement.

Coop, you could do so much more with this piece than I was able, this was shot under the fluorescent lights in my shop. If it works out, I'll be sending it your way.

I'm looking forward to a few more pieces along these lines. Thanks again guys.

Wow Don, it looks great! I really like the shape of the blade.

Could be my favorite of yours, for the overall package.

Gaussian, that's a really great knife. I love every detail of it. Especialy the flow of the knife is amazing. I asked Don a while back to make me an S-guard Bowie and if Don stays on schedule ;) than mine will be ready in 4 months or so.

Man, what a fantastic knife! Nothing about it I don't love. The blade has a bit of a Persian look to my eye. Very elegant. The bold S-guard really works with it nicely. But my favorite feature is the textured copper spacers in the ferrule. So often it's the very little things that raelly set a piece apart.

Love this knife. Different from some other pieces I have seen from Don. I love random damascus and wrought iron, so this one speaks to me.

Love those copper accents! Great sweeping lines.

That is a beautiful knife.Such style such class, did I say I think it's a beaut. You really have yourself a special piece there.Congratulations and thanks for sharing it.

Don, I thought you had dropped another knife! ;)
Seriously, I think you nailed this S-guard...you had better try it again.
Great job, it all goes together well.

Yes, I had the pleasure of shooting this one as well. It's a superstar that doesn't have a bad pose. Unbelievably sexy...

Another great knife Don! I really like the little bit of texturing on the spacer, it seems to set the piece off for me.
