I guess if I was a real pirate, I might have said AARG; but, given the circumstances, I'm going with my instincts.
We got a little water in the basement after a prolonged heavy rain last week. Not sure of its origin, since it was the middle of the basement (not along an outside wall), without any obvious evidence that it had trickled there from an edge. Anyway, that's the build up - some water that just happened to be in the area where I had some boxes left over from my move. The stuff has been down there for about 5 yrs now - I thought I knew what was there; and I was content to leave it boxed. Once the boxes were wet, it became a different story because there was a definite change in air quality down there, and I didn't want it getting moldy. I had been down there a couple days ago, cleaning up; which, for the most part, meant quickly assessing a box & getting it into a large garbage bag so it didn't drip on the wood floors when I was bring it out to the trash. One box, though, told me I should look through it - so I set it aside. My girlfriend went down there today, and was doing her own form of cleaning - actually cleaning, which I hadn't gotten to yet. I came downstairs, and she pointed at the contents of the box I'd set aside, which she'd removed, and set on a counter. My eyes focused immediately on the knives: two 15 yr old moderns (one common, one not so common), and two that I would consider special. Since this is the traditional forum, only one of those is appropriate here.

I did realize that it was missing, because I noticed it wasn't in its slip some time ago. How it came to be free floating in that box, though, I cannot say. While I would have preferred it to have been where it should have been; I'm glad that it wasn't in the leather slip in that box...the damage would have been worse. Any suggestions for cleaning up the bolsters?

Lucky save.
Any non-abrasive metal polish, I should think. Flitz seems popular around here.
Did you find the leak? Low spot, plugged or loose downspout?

if it's a silver bolster, you can start by "polishing" it with rubbing alcohol and a microfiber cloth -- you'll be amazed at how much tarnish this will clean up.

Unless it's going to be on display I would say make sure it's good and dry, wipe off the bolster and leave it. The silver is going to tarnish anyway. It has some aged character now. I could be wrong, but isn't silver like copper or brass? Isn't it meant to get that aged look? From the pics it looks great, but that's my opinion. A good polish will work, just use a rag or towel that can get into all those recesses.

I think it's a little worse than it appears in the pictures - the lighting was poor, but I didn't want the flash to flare. The mining is on a white paper towel. If I remember correctly, it is a silver bolster; and most of the tarnish is in the upper right corner (in the last image).
Thanks for the advice - much appreciated!

Traditionally, silver is polished. That's why my Gramma wouldn't have it in her house, having been "in service".
