So part of what I do everyday is professional research on birth defects. When I saw that Andy and crew would sacrifice sales to support a cause that aligns with my work in child health, I knew that we had shared values.
I wanted to make a point to contribute again to the cause of Ben Ruppe with a Super Ben Tuesday post of my own. Ben has a condition called Tuberous Sclerosis Complex (TSC), and his family has asked for your support. With this donation, I am hoping that they can meet and exceed their initial request of $5000.
To start, I have selected a particularly fine example of a blade from Allen Surls of WAS Knives.
This is a Hunter w/ Black bolsters over Black Ash burl w/ white pinstripes, tapered tang, file worked spine, hollow ground on 5/32 CPM 154
... and a close up of that filework.
For this blade, I'd like to see the Ruppe family get 100% of the value that it commanded new and unused: $350.
RLO is making a custom sheath for this one, and I am including that free of charge, with the caveat that the sheath is currently being created and will be forwarded to you directly from the maker when it is ready.
Please pay directly to Ben's GoFundMe account. The funds will be used by the Ruppe family in pursuit of care for Ben in his battle with TSC.

Just claim it here on the thread and if you are first to do so, complete the donation. I will ship the knife to you for free.

The Challenge
Consider your knife collection and the resources that you have put into this hobby, and then consider kids like Ben. I challenge each of you with unused knives to match me here and select one. Bring it forward for sale as a donation to Ben now or in the coming weeks. Many of you will prefer to give privately in your own way, but this challenge is about turning your unused blades into something useable for the Ruppe family.
I would also like each of you to think about becoming an advocate for birth defect surveillance and research. In the U.S., 1 in every 33 children are born with a birth defect, yet less than 20 states have fully funded birth defect registries. We can do our part here, but there is also something to be said for bringing that message to your friends, family, business partners, and of course your local representatives.
Thank you for your consideration.
